WIPs / Arrangement Troubles!!
« on: May 12, 2016, 04:12:15 am »
I started producing when this forum opened, and for me arranging songs is by far the hardest aspect of production.

I like all the individual segments of this but I can't make them fit together well!

Can anyone help me out with this? Do you have any tips for arranging tracks?

WIPs / Cant get the reverb right for this drop!
« on: April 03, 2016, 06:16:38 am »
I have been pulling my hair out trying to get the right balance of early and late reflections for the saw in this drop. Gotten to the point I'm not sure what I want anymore. Anyone have suggestions on how I should tweak it? Any other feedback?

Posted on Bandcamp because Soundcloud flagged me for copyright :(

Is there any way to avoid this? Was really disappointed when soundcloud flagged me for something I worked hard on.

Free download if anyone is interested. Feedback is welcome.

Sound Design / Parallel Processing and Kick Drums
« on: March 07, 2016, 07:53:49 pm »
I've been told a really good way to fatten up kicks is to add effects in parallel like a phaser. But I'm also told that low frequency sounds (kicks and basses) should always be in mono. This contradicts itself since phaser makes sounds stereo. Whats the right answer here? Should I run a kick through a phaser then make the output of the phaser mono then mix it back with the original sound?

Mixing/Mastering / I don't understand mixing/mastering
« on: March 07, 2016, 01:11:41 am »
I have always understood mixing as getting the right levels on each of the tracks in a song so every element sounds balanced and not out of place. But what i don't really understand is the concept of headroom and loudness. Say a song peaks at -3dB that means theres 3dB of headroom but that song could be much louder than another one that also has 3dB of headroom. How is this possible? dB are a measure of volume and if 2 songs are both at -3dB how come one can be louder than the other. How should I go about mixing songs so that they are loud? some things I've made max out at 0dB and are quiet compared to other things I've made that max at -3dB.

Sound Design / Synthesizing Drums for a Noob
« on: January 07, 2016, 03:21:03 pm »
I want to be able to synthesize really unique drum sounds and effects (think Flume or Ta-Ku) but I have no idea how or where to start. I know how to synthesize a basic kick from a sine wave but it sounds very plain and generic. I'm not sure how I would even go about claps, snares, shakers, hats, etc. Or do people like flume just sample drums from other songs and run them through a bunch of fx? I would rather not use pre-made drum hits from sample packs as I understand you are very limited in the sounds you can create.

I'd love some feedback. This is my first song but don't hold back, be critical I want to learn.
