If you want quarter tones without two synths, just use the pitch wheel?

Like the flute sound in Where Are U Now is apparently just his voice, not entirely sure on that one though.

You can make a flute sound from a lot of different sources using a comb filter/delays.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: DONT MIX WITH ANY HEADPHONES MADE BY BEATS BY DRE!

I think it's a better advice to know how your headphones sound (compared to studio-grade gear) and use good references while mixing.

Came here to say this. I use beats to mix. They sound great. It doesn't really matter what you mix on, as long as it's not shit and you use reference tracks and you have a good idea for how they sound.

Another +1 from me

The way I see it is that the answer to why it 'doesn't matter' is that you use whatever DAW you enjoy the most. Most DAWs are flexible enough to get whatever sound you want, some way or another, so pick the one that you're going to enjoy using. Learn a few on a basic level via demos + reading manuals and pick the one you like best.

EDIT: also this thread should definitely be in the Samples/Plugins/Gear thread

Sound Design / Re: Porter Robinson, Madeon Bass

A little bit of white noise along with waveshaping/saturation/distortion goes a long way when you want fat sounding saws. The amount potential there is pretty massive for the sort of sound you're looking for.

Edit: This is mostly for the 'Less Go' kind of bass.

I've recently gotten pretty into Zebra 2. It's fantastically modular and flexible and has become a pretty fun sonic playground.
