this isn't 100% what you're looking for, but in FL studio when you automate the pitch of an audio clip it will by default change the tempo of the sample. so you could get sort of a record scratch effect that way.

there's also a native plugin in FL called "fruity scratcher" that you can load samples into and scratch like it's vinyl. that sounds more in line with what ur goin for. hope that helps!!

Sound Design / Re: How to make this bass by Uppermost
« on: February 24, 2017, 06:19:50 pm »
hi!! i see you're new to the forum, so welcome!

the main bass in this seems like it's probably a saw wave with maybe some kind of phasing or chorus (or just multiple voices detuned), then getting really really distorted. that specific patch also sounds like it has a really fast attack on the pitch to give it that sort of pluckiness on the faster notes.

i spent a little bit of time trying to remake it, the harmonics aren't perfect but i got the main idea of it down. one saw wave patch going into a flanger that acts as a big ol' chorus (u could probably use a big supersaw too), then just lots and lots of compression and distortion.

yesss Apeidon, 'therapy' and all of de La Mancha's plugins are so fun to mess around with. they have another one called "bent" that takes a lot of finagling but adds a really interesting glitchiness to sounds that ive not heard elsewhere.

and Mat, that plugin is crazy woah, definitely going to need to play with it more!

i'd echo what lydian said!

something that helped me improve in terms of songwriting and harmony is to try intentionally limiting yourself. think of how valuable sketching ideas w/ pen and paper is in graphic design, it's like that. computers are extremely powerful for getting our ideas out, but the abundance of choices can be paralyzing. the simple act of starting a project on computer vs. "traditional" mediums has an effect on your process, which isn't good or bad, just something to keep in mind. try sketching lots of song ideas out with simple pre-made templates (ask mussar about his methods for that), and worrying about production details later.

if that doesn't work, try limiting yourself to one instrument at a time, especially playing one physically if you're able to! i started learning piano this past year, and have spent a lot of time learning beginner pieces that only use two voices, like Bach minuets. from there, i tried writing a few pieces on piano with that same two-voiced rule, and i feel like those strict limitations really helped my sense of harmony and composition.

those "the clouds parted and this song idea came to me fully formed" definitely do happen, but they're pretty rare. a lot of it is starting with a small idea and stumbling into happy accidents. try to just have fun and mess around with sounds and melodies, let it take you where it wants. you can do it!!

what vinceasot said is good advice! getting familiar with the timbres of basic waveforms is super helpful for learning sound design.

this sounds like it's two main layers - a low sine wave serving as a bass, and a pair of two detuned sine waves playing perfect fifths over it. so Part A would be just a simple Sine wave, maybe mix in a very soft square and lowpass it if you want some extra harmonics. Part B would be the two sines both up +7 semitones, one slightly detuned from the other. that gives it steadiness in the low end, while being wobbly up top.
from there, some light distortion - i got pretty close using just some soft clipping, you could probably use sylenth's built in distortion too. hope that helps!

ooh ive heard of SQ8L, will have to check them out. same with CMT bitcrusher, i mainly use TAL (too much tbh), how much different is the sound of them?

so a lot of people know about plugins like Massive, Serum, OTT, Nexus, stuff like that. what are some hidden gem you've found? synths, effects, w/e.

i was looking around on KVR and i found this really goofy one, "mykazoo," that's 90% a joke, but i loaded on a bunch of processing and got some pretty cool sounds layering it with other stuff. another one, "doppler dome," simulates the doppler effect (things changing in pitch as they move away). you can use it for both natural effects, and use it in greater doses to make weird detune effects.

and for practical effects, ive been enjoying the FerricTDS saturator. it's a nice, soft tape saturator that adds nice harmonics. what about y'all?

shorter answer: u sort of can't

longer, fl studio exclusive answer:

u could kind of rig something up in FL studio, but it might be more hassle than it's worth. to explain, a bit about stereo imaging as a concept. sound is perceived as "wide" when there is difference between the Left and Right channels. sound is perceived as "narrow" when the sound is the same in both Left and Right channels. you would need something that switches between the mono output and stereo output.

the Fruity Stereo Shaper plugin can create Mono output from Stereo input by adding the Left and Right channels of the Input together, dividing them by 2, and then putting the sum of those channels out through both the L and R channels, so it's the exact same Mid signal coming out of both channels. within the plugin, it looks like all 4 of the sliders at 50%, for reference. im pretty sure that's how FL's other plugins create Mono outputs, just in the background.

&& there's another plugin, the Fruity Peak Controller, that controls parameters based on an Input signal (think like Sidechaining, but u can make it affect anything you link it to). you split the L and R channels of a source to separate Peak Controllers, and have them control the Fruity Stereo Shaper's L->R, L, R, and R->L settings, so that when a source gets louder, it gets wider (or vice versa).

im fairly certain it would get the result you're looking for. idk if there's an analogue to the Peak Controller in other DAWs, though. i'll give this a shot tonight and update.

i never noticed that about divinity rixir, that's really cool! i only just really started getting into using stereo manipulation and it's so helpful for getting things to fit right.

listening to music closely is always a really good idea, and in a certain sense i think bringing it into your DAW can make it more "real," you can start to visualize how it was made, even take it a step forward and try to remake it. sort of like transcribing & learning songs on an instrument to get better.

saw you join the slack chat as well, but welcome mfzachary! ive never heard of studio one, how is it?

anyway, glad youre here!! hope you'll check out the rest of the forum  :)

Finished Tracks / Re: Whethan - Savage (MOTY Remix)

YASSSS MOTY

ok actual feedback! composition: the intro is really strong. that little pluck ostinato is so nice, i love how it jumps up an octave. overall, it feels concise, no part overstays its welcome. i think you could develop the bridge at 1:58 a little bit more, i like it as is, but maybe in the 2:10 section adding some new harmonic element or more atmosphere could help it release and build up better.

mixing: the spaces you create in the verses work really well, i like how sparse they are to let the vocals shine through. i said this in the Slack, but i think the drop could use a little refinement. the kick stands out too much, and the clap/snare could be brought up a little bit. the bass could also be brought up, and the vocals taken down - maybe playing with their rhythms could help with that.

i know that's a lot of critique for a finished piece, but u can always go back and work with it someday in the future. for now tho, awesome job!! you're improving a lot.

we have a section of the Slack Chat where we talk about promo stuff here and there. i think that its good to learn about the industry side of it if thats what ppl need, but imo there are other spaces better suited to it than here - i like that this is just about making music!

's up to the admins tho so who cares what i think haha

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: GhostWriting Producer?
« on: January 27, 2017, 03:53:35 am »
[disclaimer: im not a lawyer lmao if i was i would be out making money rn]

have the songs been released, and if so, are you set up with a Performance Rights Organization like ASCAP?
if so, how long has it been since the songs came out?
does the contract specify when you get paid by?

as a rule, in any creative industry, if a client is telling you "don't worry, just trust me," that's a HUGE HUGE HUGE red flag. people (even within the industry) don't always respect the work that goes into what you do. press them for specifics. you need to put food on your table just like everyone else. double check the contract, see if there are payment dates set up. if you can talk to them in person, do that (if not, maybe skype/facetime/ phone call).

more importantly, if you have the resources available, i'd recommend talking to like, an actual lawyer about best practices for songwriting. especially if you plan on pursuing ghostwriting further.

Cooper, that's really interesting about 40's production. i adore "If You're Reading This It's Too Late" for that grittiness, but had never really listened to it close enough to notice. do you have a link to that or any other interviews with 40?

huh,  i didn't even know that there was a garageband for iphone. welcome to the forum!!

also, this place is pretty quiet, but we also have a Slack chat that a lot of ppl from here are active in - you can sign up/join from the links in my signature.

cheers
