Hello all!

I just recently discovered how to accurately pitch snare drums and although many probably know this trick already, I thought at least somebody could benefit from this post and save themselves from the mistakes I've been making on past tracks :P

Previously, I've pitched my snares for buildups by using a pitch insert in my FX chain. More specifically, AuPitch in Logic Pro X. There, I would automate the pitch up, and it would never sound like other snare rolls. Oddly enough I didn't question it much, and either stuck with it or used a sampled snare roll to solve this issue.

HOWEVER, the solution is this! Loading your desired snare sample into a "sampler", or in the case of Logic Pro X, the ESX24 Sampler, you can use MIDI to walk the snare pitch up and it sounds amazing and clean. This is done by simply walking up in the piano keys. It's also way easier to control how the pitch moves up or down.

I hope this is useful information to everyone. Let me know if you have any questions!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Logic Pro X Channel Strip Settings

Hey blupanda!

Thanks for reaching out. I think I must have miscommunicated! I accomplished the "desired" picture by adding an EQ on a very low slot on a "Summing Stack" channel strip where that track was routed to.

I just was hoping all my channel strips would be as open as that one, but maybe it's not possible! Went looking through the settings and didn't find anything. Luckily it's not that big a deal :)

I'm trying to figure out how to adjust the number of Audio FX slots that appear on default. Currently, only one slot appears when I create any new tracks, unless I have that track routed to a bus that has more than one slot being used. Anyone know how to do this?

I've included a picture of my current default, and another of what I am trying to accomplish. Thank you!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Monitors Placement
« on: April 12, 2016, 09:06:00 pm »
Hey FadeX,

If possible, it's always best to avoid placing monitors near walls, especially corners. Walls will reflect and radiate sound, especially low frequencies, from the backs of the monitors and mangle what you hear. It can cause an increased level of low end and even some frequency cancellation (comb filtering) from the time difference between the actual sound and reflected sound.

I've also attached a picture that illustrates the comb filtering for you. Hopefully this helps you understand!

appreciate it! :)

Looking for a plugin that can process a vocal similarly as in "Sleepless" by CAZZETTE. Any help would be appreciated!

Yeah I can understand that! I am very new to sound design, as I've been stricken to using presets up until now.

I work in Logic, and since I cannot look at your project, I don't think I can answer your problem. However, can I suggest a cheap plugin to assist your sidechaining?

Look into LFOTool, or VolumeShaper. Both are great  :)

Mixing/Mastering / Re: How do you group your mix busses?
« on: April 06, 2016, 10:35:29 pm »
I go even further on the simple note. I do Basses, Drums, sometimes FX. Everything else I mix ungroupped straight to the master.
I used to do something similar to this, but I think that's just too many stereo tracks to work with. Having that structure and consistency might be worth considering!

I'm setting up a new template, and I'm trying to decide how many aux busses i'll have. To clarify, all of my tracks are routed to the following aux channel strips, which then go to the master stereo track. Right now, I have:
  • KICK
  • DRUMS
  • BASS
  • LEADS
  • CHORDS
  • PIANO
  • FX
What do you think of my groupings?

Sound Design / Syntorial: Learning Sound Design by Ear

Hello all!

I just wanted to share with you guys an amazing program I stumbled upon from Morgan Page's producer tips twitter account (@MPQuickTips). It's called "Syntorial" and a computer program course that's teaching me how to synthesize my own sounds from ear. It's so fantastic that I wanted to talk about it here, since I figured there are lots of producers in this forum that want to understand synthesis and sound design better.

Here's what you need to know.
  • Syntorial costs about $130, and has a nice free demo so you can try it before you purchase
  • It has about 200 lessons that go over all of the fundamental aspects of synthesis, which will go a long way for sound design
  • It's a course geared for the EARS, meaning they teach you how do identify how a sound is made by listening, and then going and matching it yourself. In other words, you hear it, try to copy it, and check how close you got.
  • They use their custom synth called "Primer", and it's included as a VST/AU with purchase
All in all, I HIGHLY recommend Syntorial for anyone looking to learn synthesis and expand their sound design capabilities. If you're interested, check out their website www.syntorial.com and download the free demo. Feel free to ask me questions in the comments :)

Thanks for the reply!

However, I'm looking for specific brands and models of computer monitors that will work well with the Macbook Pro retina.

Hello all!

I'm looking to buy two identical computer monitors to be used as a dual screen setup for producing with my Macbook Pro retina. I don't know what kind to buy. I'm looking to spend <$500. Anyone have any recommendations? I want to make sure the resolution is the same as on my laptop screen, and size I'm looking at 21.5-24" screens.

Thanks Peterynsie! I noticed I WAY overused filtering. I will definitely revisit this and add some fresher sounds to make me want to not filter them! Also, what did you mean by more fills? Drum fills? Or full on breaks of the melody line?
