Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Skype/Producers/Internet Friends

Random thought: There could be a function that allows you to put your skype name on your profile so others can add you and talk about techniques. Would help people who want to get in touch with each other speed up the process.

I'm down with this if we can get it done.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: 2016 Goals
« on: January 10, 2016, 05:35:03 pm »
I'd like to spend the year mostly working on time management and learning music theory and skills.

I also plan on doing Madeon's 24hr EP Challenge, which if you haven't heard of it, is a challenge started by Madeon where he locks himself in a room for 24 hours and has to write an EP from scratch with three new songs that are each three minutes long. He does this annually, and I would like to do it at least once.

I'm also really excited about a collective that I've helped start, and I'm releasing an old track of mine that I finished so that I can move on to other things.

We'll see how this year goes! Good luck to everyone else and their goals!

Beat me to it by five minutes.

I really want this so we don't have to see topics get repeated dozens of times.

I'm planning on getting some earplugs for a show I'm going to next month.

I've been looking at Thunderplugs, which claim to block out about 19-20db while mostly preserving sound quality. They're in a good price range for me, as they're under $25 USD for a reusable set.

I'm sure some of you have experience with earplugs, and I'd like to hear what brands you've used and whether you would recommend them!

I've loved Rob's vocals on every track I've heard him on. I don't listen to Prydz that often, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one!

As the second (out of three, so far) remixes that Grey has done from True Colors, this was great. When I saw this in my Soundcloud stream a month ago, I remember looking at the artwork and getting excited to hear it. It was actually a bit different from what I expected it to sound like, but they did a great job!

I honestly wonder if they'll do any more remixes from True Colors. We have Beautiful Now, Papercut, and now we have True Colors itself. I'd imagine that Grey will stop at those three and move on to other projects such as the EP that I believe they said would be coming out soon, but we'll see!

That one growl at 3:18 is so wild.

I'm not the biggest fan of the style, but I will admit that I highly enjoyed this remix.

I like it, but I agree about the vocals. There are some parts where it kinda clashes with the instrumental. They sound best around 1:25 when they don't have all of the sounds behind them. The track gets a bit too busy to have vocals during certain parts.

You Might Like... / Re: Madeon - You're On ft. Kyan
« on: January 10, 2016, 05:52:32 am »
Jimmy Napes helped write this one, and it's one of the prettiest tracks on the album. It's from the more upbeat half of Adventure, and Kyan's vocals really sound good with it. (Yes, the album has two halves. Imperium is the transition point that was written to take the album from a more upbeat to a more serious tone.)

I really appreciate how it was written in more of a traditional song format instead of the newer dance format. It's quite radio-friendly, but that's not a bad thing. It's a sign of what pop music is slowly approaching as it takes in more and more of dance music as inspiration.

You're On will withstand the test of a time for a while, I doubt it would seem "old" for a while, especially if pop music in the future starts sounding similar to it. (Which I predict, see you all in five years to see if I called it or not!)

This song is definitely one of my top Dillon tracks. Knowing it was written about emotional problems Dillon was having at the time over a relationship that was ending makes it even more touching.

I find a lot of producers that really get into what they do on stage and in the studio inspiring, and especially producers who I know on a more personal level.

When you really care about your craft, you go the extra mile to get it done right.

Here's the good news: Every single song you've ever loved is an open book waiting for you to read. Referencing tracks isn't just listening to them and dragging them into their D.A.W.s, it's about a whole new type of analytical listening. You're no longer a fan, you're a student.  I've attached a little PDF that has a good list of questions to take with you every time you listen to a track from now on. Start answering the questions as you listen to the song over and over. Do you notice any similarities between the tracks? Are there any trends that seem to emerge? Are certain sounds louder than others? What sounds did they think was the MOST important to hear (the sounds that feel like they're on top of everything else)?

That PDF is awesome! It's neat, color-coded, and laid out like a flowchart. Some of it is a bit above my expertise level, but I'm fascinated by how comprehensive it is! If you're the one who made it, you did a mighty fine job!

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Music Theory: The TL;DR Version

I'm a bit overloaded with work for my new classes right now, but I downloaded and scrolled through this for a minute. Looks like a great read, and I've been wanting to learn a lot more theory! Thanks for sharing!

Honestly, as many as it takes, but I would say there are a few base layers that a lot of finished songs would have.

Lead - For melodies
Chord - For chords (duh)
Drums - For rhythm
Vocals - For added meaning
Bass - For groove

And sometimes:
Sub - For speaker-rattling

Those are some very common layers that most songs would probably have, but almost all music is made about as differently as the people who are making it. Just do what feels natural, you shouldn't really have a set number to go by. Make it with as many (or as few) layers as you see adequate.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: What/Who inspired you to start?
« on: January 09, 2016, 01:21:10 am »
I had started taking guitar lessons at around 9 or 10 (after getting extremely hooked on the Beatles), which gave me some general musical knowledge, but it's still a lot less than I wish I had. This really helped spark an interest in music for me, but not necessarily in production.

I started listening to electronic in around 2011 (at age 11) when I heard some of Daft Punk's stuff. I heard Ghosts n Stuff by deadmau5 by accident in 2012 and was addicted to it for weeks. I eventually happened across some other producers like Skrillex and had phases where I really obsessed over an artist, but I don't think I decided that I wanted to make my own music until mid-to-late 2013 when I saw Madeon's Pop Culture video.

I was so mesmerized by how he had managed to pull such a thing off, and I looked into how it was done. I received a Launchpad Mini as a Christmas gift and began learning how Ableton worked. I spent too much time doing other things, and when I was using it, I was wasting time by simply playing with other people's projects and trying to make things with very little musical knowledge. After losing a lot of confidence in myself, I pretty much quit altogether, but then realized that not producing wasn't going to improve anything. I started again, and met some people that have really taught me a lot about music. I have a lot of room to improve, but I'm working on it. Aren't we all?
