Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Forcing Yourself To Produce
« on: January 29, 2016, 06:33:57 pm »
When i was working 14+hours a day most days, i didn't really feel like doing any thing besides smoking weed and playing video games. I got some work done on my day(s) off, but that was mostly spent hating life and smoking more weed and playing more video games.
....
That just actually might be the want to produce, but your body just isn't going to have it. Listen to that sign, and come back when you're ready. other wise it's just going to be not an efficient process.
When I think about it, that might just be exactly what's happening to me at the moment. ...kinda makes me think about switching a job for something not that time consuming. ???

It's always going to be time consuming dude. If you're in school, finish school. But if you're working and not going to school, you're going to have to make aims to create the time for making music.

You have to work how ever many hours to pay for your basic needs. But you can choose a job that allows you to be more efficient with your time spent at work.

Less hours more pay (usually comes with a college education in certain fields), or try to negotiate a pay raise (maybe more responsibility but it also could be with another job).

You have to seek more compensation for your time spent at work, but that usually require more sacrifice or skills.

either that, or you just need to look into your health. You may have time, but there's other external factors you may not be considering.

I have an incredibly obnoxious sample library of drums. I love drums....

http://www.freedrumkits.net/drum-kits

I have a lot of the sample packs from there, mostly hip hop and stuff.

I have bought a few packs just to do something different. I do recommend getting some quality paid samples.

https://www.drumdrops.com/

good quality for what you get. I get the one shots for like 5 bucks and that does wonders for me.

It's tough to find a balance to be able to do the things you want to do. And unless you have a situation (or environment) that allows you to do this sort of thing with out much "pressure", then you'll have to work towards any thing to get to where you want to be, in order to do the music deal.

It's a hustle, and it's hard work. During the semester I work on music sparingly as well as what my releases are. This is also forcing me to spend more time on my tracks from creation, mixing, bedroom mastering.

It's a weird combination of things that are hard to describe, but you shouldn't have to force yourself to produce. That just actually might be the want to produce, but your body just isn't going to have it. Listen to that sign, and come back when you're ready. other wise it's just going to be not an efficient process.

Just be aware, i'd also suggest writing in a journal if you have these ideas that just need to come out. I don't do that for music specifically, but i do write things down all the time.

Sound Design / Re: Issues with choosing sounds for layers

refer to a frequency chart.

I love this one.

Yea it's acoustic, but you'll arrive at the understanding that orchestral music and instruments are designed in a way to fill certain roles and to play a certain part that naturally occur of the given instrument.

If you find yourself wanting to create something specifically, i suggest you try to play with several octave ranges to see what your ear picks up. Therefore, you've created something more of you natural flow, than an otherwise force attempt (this may be what's needed but that's discretion and taste development).

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Parenting and Practice
« on: January 28, 2016, 12:43:46 am »
It indeed is.

It's really hard topic. It's not just about music. Same goes for sport, science, languages, IT knowledge. Everything that should elevate the child. I certainly wish my parents made me learn at least SOME musical instrument. A lot of stuff I decided to do later on would be a lot easier. But on the other hand, I've chosen my path anyway. It might have helped to get some goals I couldn't achieve till today. It might have helped me to not feel like garbage every other day ... but I still chose it.

...what I'm affraid of is kids being on path they didn't choose. Artists that grow up into football players, scientists unwillingly memorizing chords they don't care about and so on. There lies the key to great parenting. To reckognize what the kid is really good at (which is sometimes even miles away from what teachers think btw) and then keep him/her on that path no matter what. I've seen both extremes of this. Kid's naturally gifted that pursued right career, but also kids who went with the totally wrong one.

Also it's kind of sad that todays society is so demanding people have to solve this way sooner then the kid is even able to.

That's just a lack of being mindful, and it breeds suffering.

How do you teach to learn a mindset that is based on applying experiences and learning from any thing and every thing?

this does go beyond the aspects of any particular subject. It's definitely something to consider as a whole rather than just a single piece of the pie.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Bass Sub vs. Bass Synth
« on: January 28, 2016, 12:21:40 am »
Very insightful feedback! Thank you guys. A few more questions came up to mind when reading through your replies.

1) When cutting out the appropriate frequencies, is it better to use Low cuts/High cuts or Low shelfs/high shelfs? Part of me thinks that using cuts would get me a more clear sound because none of the frequencies would "spill" out. The other half of me thinks it's better to shelf the frequencies and allow it to "spill" out a little more gently so the overall song could be more full.

(This is confusing to me because I don't want my bass synth sub frequency to collide with my sub frequency, so using a low cut seems more appropriate)

2) Do you also cut out the frequencies of the kick within the sub and bass, or is sidechaining it good enough?

You have to find the Q or bandwidth that fits for the mix, or one that you typically like. That's a question of taste that you will have to find out for yourself.

You can't have an absolutes, and you have to deal with it. that's why studying the frequency charts can get you there. It also helps you understand what may need to be in a certain spot of a given eq range.

I don't use sidechaining, because it's sort of lazy. Though i won't knock it's purpose, i just choose not to use it.

Sidechaining is an additive, and not a replacement for good eq practice.

so you wrote your bassline, added a synth, sylenth or massive or whatever,

you need a sub underneath all that so it sounds nice and good for the ears, basically you just need to duplicate the same notes to your sub channel, you need to eq it with a high cut at around 300hz i think, you must have compression and sidechaining

this is the most basic technique, there are more advanced techniques where you can start mixing things up with the notes...with amazing effect, i've heard it a lot in the electro house stuff..

if you are adding sub for your leads, you can put the sub bass notes at the 2nd lowest note of your leads,
say your leads start at G1, then layered into G2, then put the sub bass notes on your G2

You have your sub go up to 300hz? Shit. I cut around 150 and layer a mid level bass from 150 to 2k.

Look up an instrument frequency chart.

understand where the frequencies start and end. That's why he has a cut at 300, because there's not "sub" to begin with at that region. But the audible bass frequencies clearly go past that.

And going back to having a system that best replicates the sub, you won't hear it with out a system.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Bass Sub vs. Bass Synth

You're dealing with a frequency question here.

Sub is only used on a system that actually can replicate those frequencies at a level that is audible. Therefore, sub bass is rather dangerous and have to be maintained other wise it could fuck your shit up and collapse your chest cavity.

But that aside, it's just a layer man. you layer in your sub so that it does have that feeling in that region. Your bass synth can easily play what the sub is doing and both of those elements combined will create a nice phat sound. Because you have 1, and audible bass synth and 2, a sub sonic feeling which grants you more power.

Depending on the style you're looking towards, your Bass synth actually become the main focus and your sub bass is an accent. But in any case, the sub is always an accent, unless it's the only bass component that you have (most times it's not because you need special replication to recreate it. but if you're not concerned about having it "sound good any where and on any thing" then don't worry about it).

On your width question, bass synths can have stereo effects on them, but just make sure that you control it appropriately. It's the sub sonics that don't register well in the stereo realm, which are almost (and probably) always left mono.

It's about the control. I suggest some research, or a conversation topic with a professional/student of the craft! also maybe more private conversations from the forums here.

Sound Design / Re: Helpful Thoughts for Kick Processing
« on: January 27, 2016, 12:35:34 am »
i try to make sure my kick layers, sub and acoustic, sort of meld together in pitch and frequency. So you can feel it as well as hear it.

But what you described is pretty good way of looking at it. I might suggest more analysis and sharpen your description for understanding and conversation!

Sound Design / Re: FM Synthesis
« on: January 27, 2016, 12:33:20 am »
Fm synthesis is really fantastic. There's a history on it some where....But i know you can generate many natural sounding tones and timbres with it.

that being said, it's also a pain in the ass to use effectively and effeciently.

Wikipedia

Out side of that, it's just changing the waveform to what ever characteristic you want. I know you can get some really nasty basses out of it, and some pretty ok sounding leads. It's typically described as harsh, and very hard to control if you're using it in a polyphonic  way. but that lack of control will lead you to interesting effects that you may utilize for music. But for music's sake, it's just tough to control.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Quick trick to make your track louder.
« on: January 26, 2016, 03:12:32 pm »
nice, I've struggled with this for a while and got close to it a few weeks ago.

I wonder if adding an exciter, eq, before this would work?

Or is the idea just to make the MIX and only THE MIX, louder?

Every context is different so I couldn't really say. I generally only use an EQ as a scanner on my master, say if I cut away like 6dB of the mids and it sounds cleaner, I would adjust the instruments within the mix to fit/balance better, you know what I mean? Rather than effecting the whole signal.

Well the idea behind that video is to make the mix louder as a whole yes. And as djparted recently stated, maybe that is where multiband comes in, to zoom in on specific bands in terms of loudness.

Getting sick of the word 'loudness' already, currently telling myself to be quiet. Ironic

right, the only reason i'd want to add an exciter to the mix is to give the top end some love. The reason i'd want to use an eq is only for low and high cuts at the sub and 16khz - 22khz range by -1db.

Exciter first, then eq. I've played around with those settings before and it seems that's what i like the most.

the big difference between this guy's advice and what i do in my mastering chain is some slight multiband compression into a parallel compressor, in which i don't limit very much. I try to get my peaks to 0 at any point.

I usually make things louder for myself rather than for actual posting.

Sound Design / Re: Snares
« on: January 25, 2016, 03:15:56 pm »
Few snares. but the foundation is always the same.

1.808 (bottom end), mixed to taste
2.acoustic snare, mixed to taste
3. acoustic snare modeler, because i use reason i can do this.

after that it depends on the sound. I eq all the layers and mix it all together. if i want more electronic sound i put more 808, but if i want more natural i put more acoustic snare. Once i get something i like, i sample it and then put it in one instance of my drum machine (kong).

Then it's just a mixing game from there.
