Incredible work. Well done  :)

I'm very late on making a response post to this, but thank you so much!

It took a minute to finish it all up (about 2 years, 2013 - 2015), and although I don't feel it's really representative of my current music, I'm still incredibly happy about it and I'm still happy for all of the songs

I figured I could post it here, so here's a link to the whole album stream. You can download it from Bandcamp using the little shopping cart on the right of the soundcloud player

even though I said I feel like this is unrepresentative of what I do now, pleeease feel free to give advice or thoughts on any track or the entire album! Hope you enjoy it!

I can't figure it out :(

a guitar  :P

Personally me, I'd rather learn the instrument but there's many libraries for guitars, a good example is Sugar Bytes Guitarist, rack it with NI Guitar Rig and you can get some pretty realistic work out of it.

Maybe in the future, I don't really have the time right now...

That's okay, things take time, in the meantime check out some of the guitar libraries out there, especially Guitarist. It might sound a bit ridiculous but I genuinely believe the best way to recreate physical instrument sounds are to practice with an actual instrument and learn IMO, but it's very understandable if time or money is a restraint.

this is fire works man, the only thing id say is somehow bring out that drop sound more i like that one

I don't normally like dark/filthy/nasty music. But this is a banger the crowd is never ready for. ho-lee-fuck. Wow. I'm impressed. It captures so many elements at once it gives me shivers and this is coming from a melody whore.

Composition is perfect. Styling is extremely unique. EXTREMELY unique. I personally think the "emptiness" you're talking about helps add in a new element into the song and should be left as is. I'd like to know how you got that ambience so well in between drops.

Whoa, thank you two for the cool responses, I'm pretty happy with how my composition developed and it makes me glad to see others give some feedback on it! Although the emptiness doesn't really apply to the entire song but rather specific parts, I still see what you're talking about with the stripped down elements in general. As for the ambience, it's just the stripped down elements, stereo separation through a effect channel, and small reverb. I do have to admit that it wasn't carefully looked at, but the way it managed to come out is something I'm real happy with, and it's definitely something to look back on and document.

Now on the mixing section, It sounds like your lead drop sounds and high hats are trying to run on the same frequencies. A tip I have for that is use a fabfilter pro-q2 to eq the high hats to the left or right side (your choice) and then on those same frequencies but an eq on your lead tone and have it go to the equal strength on the opposite side. That way you hear both sounds going on top of eachother fluidly!

In the drop section it also sounds like your kick and sub are riding on the same frequencies as well which causes the sub to lose its power when the kick hits (maybe that's how you want it idk, to each their own!)

Great tip, I don't have Pro-Q2 (I plan on buying it because I really need a visual EQ) but I think Renaissance EQ does L/R EQing, I'll check that out! Only thing that's strongly intentional is yeah, the kick and sub riding on the same frequencies, and the kick side-chains the sub, causing the kick to overpower it. That's generally what I do most of the time, there's times where I don't do that but in most music like this, it's my own way to go.

I can help you with more mastering stuff if you'd like, just shoot me a message! If you want to we can skype so I can further explain and show you what I mean. Or if you're using FL you can send me the FLP and I can attempt a master for you. :) Just lmk!

Super solid track, I'm impressed.

Thank you for the offer man, I'll always keep that in mind. At the moment, I'm keeping it for an EP, once all of the tracks are at a stage where I'm happy, I'm going to send it to a label. I'll keep your offer in mind though!

Thoughts:
composition finished but my problem is that it seems to feel empty at certain parts like the opening breaks part, or the breakdown, so I'm wondering if anyone is willing to drop any ideas towards this, I'll most likely update this with clips on those specific parts

also mixing, need advice on that, specifically for the factor that I think the volume differs between the breakdown and the chorus' / drops. Hope you enjoy it!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Bitwig
« on: February 25, 2016, 04:30:19 pm »
FL user turned Bitwig user here, I've had nothing but a great time with Bitwig, although Bitwig has it's own issues, and one of them pointed out in this thread is just that it's not 'ready' to replace a lot if 'replacing' were a selling point. There's things missing with default plugins (a strong point: a vocoder), there's a lack of Rewire support if you roll that way (JACK seems to be able to do something like Rewire, but I haven't looked into it, until then here's this), and a kind of useful yet disappointing set of default sounds.

As for the positives and what made me move, PDC, plugin sandboxing (FL has plugin sandboxing I think, but it just didn't seem to work for me majority of the time? There'd be points where FL would have a plugin crash and it'd tell me that a plugin crashed, but majority of the time, if a plugin crashes, it all crashes..), the ability to have multiple projects 'open' (I say 'open' because you can only have the audio engine on for one which makes sense), the audio engine startup process generally just being faster than loading up a project in FL, audio events and how incredibly easy and fast it is to play with them compared to FL, and it's composition view being so flexible. I haven't bothered looking at Open Controller API yet. There's more coming along the way for Bitwig like Network Syncing and Modular Device Programming too, so I feel Bitwig will have a strong future ahead of itself.

I still like to use FL on the side though, FL is still always useful, including for it's piano roll, which is forever.

This song is very enjoyable my man, I wish the second link was viewable though

As Bertie mentioned, the release on the sidechain could be quicker, my problem with that is that when your kicks are doing a 1/8 or 1/16 rush, the volume sidechaining on your elements just end up sounding incredibly strong which isn't the best thing ever IMO.

Another suggestion, I do believe some of your elements should be panned around a bit more, a good example are the vocal chops at 1:02, those would do real nice when being panned with an LFO for variation

overall, great job man! I love this!

off the top of my head: Sun Kil Moon, Timmy Thomas, Meiko Kaji, Chara, Mac Demarco, Mr. Mister, definitely been on a recent Gary Numan binge, Anberlin, Tears Run Rings, Alcian Blue, Cerebral Ballzy, He Is Legend, and a good number of rap artists

You have a unique sound for sure, that intro reminds me of the creativity of Flying Lotus in some points! As far mixing goes, from my point of few I think you've nailed down a pretty good mix. The only thing I would say is that it sounds a little flat at some points because there lacks the faintest amount of brightness on the top end. I think you could brighten up that drop bass synth a little and your drums just a touch to really open up that spectral range for the listener, if that makes sense.

Those basses on the drops are expertly mixed I'd have to say, the stereo imaging is dope af. I'd really be interested in how you made those. Also the transition from the first drop into the calmer atmopsphere of the break is so clean I loved sinking into that new section.

That's all I could offer you I hope it helps.

-Ryan

Bit of a late response, but thanks for the feedback!

Also the basses: It was nothing too complicated as most of it happens in the synths, Serum. Serum is very capable of only doing things inside of it especially thanks to it's resampling features. The first one you hear is Serum, two wavetables with two LFO sources, one functioning as a pitch envelope to have a small 'hit' at each start, and the other just moving both wavetables. Both oscillators are linked to a phaser that's being moved by the same LFO moving the wavetables. Post processing is just CamelCrusher in phat mode, some low end cutting and a high-end boost, and a send to an effects chain for some stereo imaging.

The others are basically the same (including the faster one at 1:48 which is just the wavetable moving differently) except the bass at 2:25 which is a bit more. Two wavetables and a phaser with a LFO moving the tables, first one being bent positively. I stacked a noise wavetable under it to give it more of a texture, post process wise is just some reverb which is then all crushed under CamelCrusher which is why you hear the reverb's release after a break.

I hope I explained it well enough for you to understand because frankly I'm not too good at explaining myself :P

kick at the beginning sounds too stereo and doesn't really fit in the mix too well and clap in the drop is also kinda lost in the mix. the rhodes type synth at 3:10 also kinda sounds a tiny bit muddy when the drums hit, along with a few other elements further on. great mix otherwise man.

I figured it might be a good call to fix up the clap, I always felt it sounded fine the way it is but that's what I got the most: the clap was too lost in it all. Good catch on the rhodes too!

Thank you two for the feedback!

Thoughts:
opening is lazy but I'm gonna work on that more once I come up with more ideas for it
Mixing seems to be on and off to me which is why I wanna ask for a separate pair of ears
I accidentally left a big ol' gap of silence at the end, ignore that hahaha

feel free to also give suggestions towards the composition or anything else! It's a secret upload so I can't embed it, sadly..

I actually demo'd Nexus at a buddy's house, and I honestly didn't like a number of the sounds from my own standpoint and what I usually like to create. The factor of it also being just a sampler with some sounds was overall a turn-off, but I have to admit, a number of the pianos were incredibly well, hell, even the cheesy ones, The orchestral sounds like Brien mentioned were also top notch.

I wouldn't blame anyone for using Nexus, but personally me, just seems like a turn off when I can have full control in synthesizers.

Not sure if My Guns has that specific lead that's referred to in this AMA answer by Gud, but here's his answer
