Whoever created that server needs to show up. We're headless right now. I offer myself as OP. I use Discord all the time.

That's me! I'm constantly online there (as NoTioNLeSS), waiting for people to show up or for an official statement from the forum administration.

A chatbox / chat room could totally butcher this place as a forum whilst bringing us together as a community. Idk it's a tradeoff / a risk.

I disagree that it would butcher anything. IRC channels have existed since the start of the internet and they have never butchered message boards.

A few gentlemen have logged into Discord and some nice conversations were had, conversations that would have no place in a message board, but it's not like you're gonna search through chat logs to find useful information -- that's what the forum is for.

WIPs / Re: First draft of a Prog House track

You seem to have already diagnosed most of your own problems. Maybe keep the chord progression short and the way it is until 1:00. Then at that point you can try extending it to 8 bars so it doesn't get so repetitive.

Thanks man, any tips on how the drum fills and/or transitions could be better? I tried filtering the piano a bit but it didn't seem to have much of an effect.

Hey thanks for the feedback, sounding too mainstream is no problem for me at this moment, I think finding your own sound comes with time, and this is my first track :)

WIPs / First draft of a Prog House track
« on: February 12, 2016, 07:28:11 am »
Hey guys,

This is the first track I've actually finished arranging, I like the harmony/melody a lot but the production is quite amateur so I would really appreciate if you guys could critique me to death on it.

Link: https://soundcloud.com/pedromtavares/sunshine-1st-draft/s-ZPItK (I couldn't embed it for some reason)

I tried using this track from Avicii as a reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFBC2vS8Ej8

I have a few things which I'm not happy with and think could be improved:
 - It gets repetitive after a while and I think one of the reasons is because the chords and melody are 4 bars long instead of 8 bars.
 - The drum fills and FX are really bad, I struggled a lot with them, especially white noise.
 - There are very few instruments (piano, pluck, crappy acoustic guitar from Live and a bassline) and no layering going on.
 - I think some pads and/or stabs could also help adding some variation.

Overall I'm happy with the arrangement and the track's vibe, but I really plan on making it better based on the feedback I get. I'm also extremely open to collaboration on it if any of you fine gentleman think it would be worth your time (I'm using Live).

A discord channel might be a good idea.

Might need invitation only, but that's not so hard to set up with link shorten tools and what not

Not sure I understand, the link I posted is already an invitation to the channel, anyone can click that to be redirected to it, and if the forum admins think it's a cool idea, they can just add a 'Chat' link on the navbar (next to 'Members' maybe?) and anyone that clicks it will be already in the channel.

Hey guys,

I took the liberty of creating a Discord channel for the forum: https://discord.gg/0p2oi7nYnSu5D9Os

Discord is a really cool modern chat app that gets used primarily by gamers (as it has a few game-related features), but I don't see a reason to why we couldn't use it as a general chat (it even has an embedded voice chat channel).

If any forum admin likes the idea, I'll gladly hand over admin powers on the channel, I'm hanging around mostly all day as the app stays open while I'm producing :)

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: No Music Background...Thoughts?
« on: February 03, 2016, 05:32:10 am »
I feel a bit inclined to answer this because not having a musical background also scared me from getting into music production, specially because I lean towards melodic genres like progressive house. The truth is, you don't need any -- all you need is good taste and the willingness to work hard.

There is plenty of material out there on basic music theory and you can educate yourself as you produce. I would recommend seeing at least a couple of video tutorials on it so you at least know things such as chords and scales, and you can literally learn this in one day (at least the basics to start off).

Don't let fear take over, it's all just knowledge and if the next guy can do it, so can you.
