WIPs / Where can i take this?
« on: April 12, 2016, 11:11:10 pm »
seeing what you guys think and how i can bring this back full circle, i want to keep the arrangement simple. The end doesn't fit in that well i feel.

Let me know your thoughts.

Definitely want to play around more with glitch plugins. Infinite possibilities. Thanks.

Yup - exactly that sound.

That's interesting, i might look into playing with Ableton's tension synth some more. (I did a search on hammer on/off)

You hear where there might be some beat-repeat and reverse effects in there too?

Sound Design / Beautiful Dynamic Mallet/Chord Design [Odesza]

I'm trying to get figure out what Odesza is doing with their chords in this song - It sounds like it's a simple mallet hit.. with some secret sauce?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QaKs09tSBU

My theory is their using a combination of effectrix and beat repeat. It sounds gorgeous.
What do you guys think?

That's what I was thinking, but aren't there like a bunch of other random folders in the audio/library section of our computers that carry some specific DLL files for plugins? Maybe I'm overthinking it and there's really just a few.

I need to reinstall my instance of Ableton, but I don't want to lose my plugins and their organization.

Is there a simple way to do that? If I replace my old instance of Ableton with my new instance will Ableton write new empty folders in the place of all the old ones?

Thanks for the advice.

Mixing/Mastering / Ear Fatigue
« on: January 21, 2016, 11:31:44 pm »
After producing for 3-4 hours a day 4 days in a row, I've hit a new level of ear fatigue. I can feel the pain. I need to start being more conscious of my volume while producing & mixing.

I don't know why I push it, even when I feel fatigue coming there's this masochistic urge to continue at the volume I'm at. I somehow convince myself it's okay and it's worth it.

I feel like at lower volume I can hear the sounds as well. I know that's false, I've learned that your ear can actually differentiate sound better at lower volumes, kinda why at a nightclub you can hear someone easier if you stick your finger in your ear.. Overall volume goes down and you can mix out different sounds easier. You can finally understand that friend asking you to buy him that Moscow mule.

How did you guys learn to produce at lower volumes? How do you still get the same enjoyment out of it? How often do you turn it up? I can't keep hurting myself. Wanted your thoughts on it.

So great! How'd you get that flute sound? I'd reduce some of the panning you have going at 17 seconds, that mid range vocal bite? is going left and right and get's kinda intense.

Other than that sounds groovy!

Huge fan of your drum patterns dude.

You've got a really good grasp on melody and overall vibe it seems like.

Your main lead, I would use a different instrument for that so it stand out.

I like the hip hop esque rhythm you have going in the drums, Try to bring your kick out more by removing some other conflicting frequencies.

Nice job with the pitch bending, I'm a huge fan of that. Gives you that wiggly mood.

Would be nice to hear you layer those vocals later on with the same vocal loop +12 semitones, lower volume, slightly phrased. That's trending big time these days, sounds good.

Overall, the idea is great, it'd be nice for you to take a break towards the middle though and strip everything away, the synth occupies I believe the entire track.

Nice job man, i'd try to add some more space and interesting transition sounds. You have the structure down but don't be afraid to pause every now and then to give your listeners a moment to think and collect themselves.

It's very nice piece of work, as your previous WIP :) Oriental feeling, the voices make this unique. I like the progression coming in 0:20. The break from 0:40 - maybe add some minimal percussion ? My proposal. Also you should combine with other 'little synths' to give track more melodic feeling and flow. Nice man !

P.S. If you want to check my only one WIP, I'll be grateful as a beginner :)

Thanks!! Would love to.. send it over? here or via PM please.

Not sure how to describe this haha but I thought I'd share the idea with you. Inspirations are Bonobo, Flume, Glitch Mob, Odesza.. Let me know your thought, is it totally wack or is it coherent? Going to write part 2 two later tonight. I really don't like the main synth I'm working with when the full song comes in.. It's an Ableton dnb sound. Might look into some presets in Spire or Serum.

Nice job dude, the percussion really highlights the tracks movement. What're you doing with the percussion to get that downward pitching snares?

Also where do you get that "hey" sample from, I hear it everywhere.

I think your chord progression at the drop might be too complex or stretched. What if you simplified it?

If you wanted to keep the chord progression maybe adding more of a closing chord to end it.
