Sound Design / Re: Porter Robinson, Madeon Bass
« on: January 06, 2016, 04:42:32 pm »
I recently found a sample of a long saw bass note in the Leviathan sample pack and by cutting it up I got that cool older electro sound.  I'll try to find it for you later.  But, I think that working with audio, as opposed to MIDI, in this situation works well Maybe with some LPF automation.

Try opening up a synth that you like and beefing up a low pitched saw wave and bounce it to audio, then manipulate it from there

I have heard of this, and I feel like I should try it!  You could even make stems of the song for yourself instead of just using the final track.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: a rather unusual question about panning and stereo
« on: January 06, 2016, 02:30:37 pm »
Much respect to you for still pursuing this hobby/passion/etc. with something like that.

Visual representations definitely seem helpful, maybe asking other producers for help?  If you have any close producer friends or mentors maybe you could sit down with them for a while, talk about panning and any stereo width plugins that you might use and compile notes about what each parameter will do to your sound so you have a reference for what your desired outcome is.

Maybe if you're talking about panning... you could test it out by panning something to the ear that you use for hearing.  Then say "okay, I know that if the panning knob is turned to 65% and it sounds like this, assigning that value in the other direction will create the same effect on the other side."  Does that make sense?

Best of luck with your productions :D

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Good Vocoders?
« on: January 06, 2016, 02:15:39 pm »
Ableton's vocoder is great - it can be used to add texture to any sound even without a modulator signal. Not a vocoder, but Guitar Rig's Formant Filter is super dope. I hear it used in a lot of Madeon's stuff (especially in that talkbox-y solo in Pay No Mind)

How do you go about using the guitar rig formant filter?? I love the Pay No Mind solo!!!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: What is your favorite sample pack

The KSHMR sample pack is pretty phenomenal.  They require minimal processing to fit well in a mix, and the FX/Ambience/Stabs etc. are all really unique and good to have.

Pretty straightforward question.  Also extends to the various libraries... what are everybody's favorite libraries?  The only one I have is the New York Grand.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Help with Scarlett plugin suite!!
« on: January 06, 2016, 02:06:00 pm »
I recently bought a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and it comes with a lot of downloads and extra goodies.  One thing I have a license for is the Scarlett plugin suite, but when I run the installer I'm only given the options to download 64bit, 86bit (???), and some other format... maybe RTAS... not sure.

I'm running FL Studio 12, 32bit and I took a stab at the 64bit plugins working but it just made the DAW crash.  So can anybody help me get these plugins up and running in FL? Thanks!!

Recently picked up a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and I'm thrilled!  Has being giving me recordings that sound pretty good.

It's a long term goal of mine to get one.  Probably isn't a "necessity" but probably a secret weapon for a lot of producers.  Headhunterz has made some of his popular lead sounds with a virus.  (From his producer masterclass, found on YouTube)

Some of my favorite samples have been ones that I picked up from various FLP downloads and free sample packs.  Just be on the lookout for free samples and downloads and things and you might strike gold.  There's definitely some luck to it.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: The Do and Don't Encyclopedia

I like the idea!

Do: EQ the kick and bass in ways that will clean up your sub frequencies!
Don't: Let your high frequencies build up and create an ear piercing mix!
