Sound Design / Re: Simple question about equing
« on: January 15, 2016, 01:30:57 am »
It depends on how steep a cutoff you're using, as well as your Q. An aggressive cutoff (I'd probably consider 24 dB pretty aggressive), will create a huge phase shift at your cutoff point and can actually create quite the boost in volume. If you're insistent on using an aggressive cutoff, either set a fairly low Q or use a linear phase EQ if possible.

Just keep writing and deleting until you're happy with an idea, it's one of those things where there's no set method. Theory will probably help, but when it's all said and done you just sort of have to keep churning out piles of shit and eventually you'll come across an idea that's actually half decent. At least that's what I do, I've spent days just trying to come up with some half decent chords for some of my stuff.

Man, those are some awesome tracks. Why'd you stop, just getting bored of the style?

Arrangement is something i struggle with always start with a breakdown then main drop if i start with just the bass and loops i can never get anywhere with it, my projects are really messy need to learn to name each track and colour sections haha usually i make 140bpm trance but hit a brick wall with that style, thanks

I love that 140, full on type of trance. You got any on your soundcloud? I'd love to give it a listen.

Oh man, this sounds fucking awesome. It's your track so ultimately your choice as to how you want it to sound, but I'd maybe wait with the lead for 8-16 bars in the "drop", maybe tease it a bit and then bring it in. Your chords sound really good and I feel like they could maybe be given the spotlight for a bit.

Add a bit of filtered white noise to your bass and distort the whole thing, should make it sound a lot bigger and more enhanced-y

I really like this, all the acid sounds playing off of each other sound awesome. Might just be me, but I feel like that acid sound sitting dead centre that comes in at the 12 second mark was over EQ'd, it would probably sound better with more low mids on it.

Best way I've seen is in this tutorial by The Thrillseekers https://youtu.be/DYV6NRQSuNQ?t=18m25s

Pretty simple method to grab a kick from most tracks out there. It's at 18:25 if the time link didn't work.

I feel like motivation will always come in waves, I've had times where I can go a few months without feeling any motivation to write music. I think the key at that point is still trying to further yourself on the technical side of things. Also forcing yourself to sit down and just write something can usually spur some creativity/motivation.

I love the intro, the acid sound is awesome I'd just cut down on the panning a bit, just make it less pronounced. That much movement causes too much focus on that sound. When you take the lead out at around the 4 minute mark I'd bring some highs in for the bass, I feel like everything is a little too lowpassed at that point. I like your idea overall though, reminds me of some of the older progressive/uplifting stuff that was coming out like 10 years ago.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: How did you learn how to make music?
« on: January 07, 2016, 11:16:04 pm »
I've got a ton of years of classical music training, piano, played clarinet in a big stage band, guitar, bass, and I've dabbled in other instruments. Taught myself how to use ableton once I was sick of working with bandmates, I prefer having the ability to be in control of everything I'm doing.

Yep, I use a pair of BX5 D2s and for the price they can't be beat. I do want something bigger eventually since the bottom end of these is kinda non-existent but yea, solid monitor choice.

I think I was able to recreate the lead from the first track in Spire. Osc 1 & 2 are at full volume, osc 1 is tuned up 12 cents, detune set to 690, density at 500, 7 voices. Osc 2 is tuned down 12 cents, detune at 690, density at 425. Both oscillators are at full width. Routed to an infecto filter with a bit of resonance. All that then runs through some soft distortion set at about 25% dry/wet, set the drive to taste. Set your delay and reverb and you should be good to go. The key with these types of saws is the detune between the oscillators, not just the detuning on the individual oscillators. I've found that by spreading your 2 oscillators by +-12 cents in this case it gives you a less harsh sound.

Dave Parkinson Trance Essentials from Freshly Squeezed Samples. It's like 15 gigs of awesome.

Take a track from whatever genre you're producing, drop it into ableton and break your arrangement into sections of 8-16 bars. You'll have a general template for said genre at which point you can take your idea and fit it into the template. This was probably the one thing that really helped me go from 16 bar loops to finishing tracks within the past year. And just go with your ideas, write them out and don't worry about sounds initially. Just get something down and then you can mess with the sound until your ears fall off.
