Try Auratone cubes! (Or even one for mono only). Gives u a very "real life situation" feeling and they are cheap as well!

Brand wise: get Mogami Gold, or if u have the budget: vovox sonorus. Yes, they are expensive, but worth it...

+1 on GIK Acoustics and co. Forget the foam thins, they don't do anything serious against bass control...

First off, I am mainly using plugins (including UAD and co) - but I gotta say - there is still something that real hardware does to the sound that software doesn't. Don't know if it's the DA/AD process - but there is something"real and musical" about running your songs through outboard.
Personally, I started to use a (hardware) summing device last year, and there is something it does, that software plugins can't (or at least i couldn't get them to do).
Now, the question if it makes a song "better", i don't know - there has been a lot of great songs mixed and mastered with software only. However the older i get, the more i can hear and personally prefer that "outboard" song and warmth.

I do like the Tannoy Reveal series - although i don't claim it's the "best" in it's price range. KRK's have become a go-to in the prosumer pricerange, so has yamaha's HS series..

I once did a song called "Lentos - Forget about us" on Coldharbour Rec.

Lentos is the celtic name of my hometown "Linz" in Austria. For some reason, I never got an official dj gig in my hometown until 2010 or 11.
Before that, I played some big venues globally (Amnesia Ibiza, Nikki Beach Miami, Moscow,..) but NEVER got a (paid) gig in my hometown (parties at friends houses don't count)

So we came up with "Lentos - forgot about us" which later was officially changed into "forget about us" - still same message ;)

I actually use it a lot for pads too since I love the hypersaw function lol

Absynths spheres are great though.

How about:
Get some speaker decouplers like IsoAcoustics (I swear by it!) or Primacoustics to decouple them from your surface. works wonders in bass clarity and stereo separation.

Secondly, get GOOD cables - like mogami gold or better (I personally love vovox sonorus). I tried and tested cables to death, especially the bass range clears up with better cables.

Also Phalanx (sampler) and metrum are great tools - i use metrum for most of my kicks, and phalanx all over my sessions for a lot of addon sounds.

There is now some really good plugins that create that analogue sounding high end boost. The UAD Pulteq EQ (new version) really does the job, or Manley Massive Passive.
Also love the flux epure 3 - it just sounds expensive. I am sure there is some more good plugins out there.

Speakers have to be capable of sounding "linear" throughout different volumes too, that's right...
Haven't really worked on Mackie monitors, so I can't judge - but went through a lot of speakers myself (and still own 6 different sets that I am changing from time to time within my studio setup) - and can really say some shine on all levels, some don't on low levels for example...

To add more confusion to this: A shitty or mediocre monitor controller can sound different on low levels than higher levels (especially stereo-image), that's why in my opinion the really good monitor controllers start at 1000$$ plus - but they will sound (pretty much) exactly the same on low volume as they do on loud...
That's not the case in my experience. When I chose my monitors, I tested among others Mackie HR824s. They're a true studio classic, one of the highest rated and most popular models. They sounded amazing, but only at volumes higher than what would be appropriate in a bedroom studio, among neighbours. That's the one thing that made me choose something else :)
