what monitors would you recommend heatcliff? I was thinking of the tannoy reveal 802's since I have actually really liked my 501's. I'm thinking about maybe getting a sub too

Well recommending monitors is difficult cause it all comes down to personal preference and ultimately the price tag... For the 1000< per set I personally like the yamaha's (ns80 etc), around the 3-4k price range i really like the Event Opals, above that pricerange there is my Lipinski L-70's (Pro: the most detailed / revealing / amazing nearfields you probably will ever hear - cons: still "kinda" beta - Since they build every order from scratch), also Amphions or ATC's. You see it's all a very personal taste!

+1 on putting your monitor on the length size of the room, in this case maybe in front of the window. Seeing you have no room treatment you will have bass buildup and unwanted reflections regardless, so definitely look into acoustic treatment!

Get a plugin like "Vengeance - Metrum" or "Nicky Romero's "Kick" - browse through the presets and find out how they made their kicks - you'll learn a lot!

Looks good, especially since Polish monitors are unknown / so underrated.
I bought myself Lipinski L-70 a couple of months ago, and besides nobody even knowing about the brand, they are by far the best in their price class. Period.
Having tested ATC, barefoot, amphion, focal and co - doesn' even come close.

Why should it be cheating? It's a great tool for inspiration, but it doesn't create a hit for you.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing in Mono vs. Stereo?

That's right Miles. But checking it in Mono as well doesn't hurt - it always tells me additionally if my balance is kinda right. Interestingly what I found is I will check the right amount of reverb on mono too - summed up onto a single mono channel i find it easier to tell u when a mix is cluttered by to much reverb sometimes... But again, my Main speakers are stereo.

There are respected engineers that mix a lot of big records mostly in mono - read an article recently about Kendrick Lamar's engineer, who mixes 95 percent of his stuff on a mono aura tone cube - I also find myself doing a lot of balancing (levels, checking eq settings) on my a avantone cube in mono, switching back and forth to my main monitors (stereo). To me it is a good supplement!

First: get a good monitor controller / interface and speakers. the reason why some of the high end monitor controllers are so extremely expensive is that they give u repeatable stereo image down to very low volumes - meaning it sounds "still the same" on low volume as it does on high volume. Another quick tip for leveling: check your mixes on mono - it still tells me a lot if my kick is right when I switch to mono

Bad room acoustics. Start treating off your room with broadband bass traps, and it will get better.

4 of my go to tools that Don't seem all too popular or talked about!

UVI spark verb for reverb - great stuff!

Flux Epure 3 & Steinberg Neve Portico 5033 EQ's-  I have tried and tested pretty much every software eq extensively and these two are by far the best sounding ones to me

Antelope audio satori: full analogue monitor controller and 8 channel analogue summing device - extremely clean and accurate for monitoring - plus you get that analogue feel thanks to the summing

i wonder why nobody mentioned Calvin Harris yet. His mix downs  really sound expensive - reference how deep is your love - so extremely open...
Also newer Zedd stuff sounds incredible - the vocals in "beautiful now" sit so well - his engineer Ryan is also incredible ...
Also Cosmic Gate & Jerome Isma-ae- Telefunken for clubbier stuff and anything recent by Above & Beyond & Prydz. Especially The new Prydz stuff sounds so smooth and analogue - almost like no "digitalitis" at all...
Also worth checking out is Robert Babicz productions - probably amongst the best engineered electronic productions out there.

Also the way "Daft punk - get lucky" sounds is insane. Mick Guzauski (the engineer) is just incredible...

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Studio monitor issue/ best cables?
« on: February 24, 2016, 03:09:30 pm »
IMO the difference becomes more subtle the more expensive the cable (Vovox Sonorus vs Mogami Gold for example - i use both) - but the more cable u use (for example interface to a konitor controller, monitor controller to speakers) u wanna stick to really good ones - imo at least mogami gold.

In any case if u get new speakers - also get decoupling devices such as isoacoustics or speaker stands with decoupling features! It improves playback quality immensily compared to when you put your speakers on a desk for example..

I beg to differ. Cables can make an immense difference - especially in clarity, stereo detail and bass reproduction.

Hi Gearfiend, I have the exact same setup (JBLs w/ Scarlett interface).  I don't think that the quality of XLR cables will make a huge difference and I'm not sure that will fix your problem. I think most quality cables are just that...quality.  (It's like HDMI cables, ya know? Any expert will tell you to buy the cheapest ones - no need for the MONSTER cables - because they all do the same thing.)

Which cables are you currently using?  When does it make the static sound?  Is your DAW open?
