Sound Design / Re: Deadmau5 bass? - Sofi Needs a Ladder
« on: October 23, 2016, 01:44:51 am »
Most of Joel's sound design is pretty simple in all honesty.

I mean, I'd just try something like Saw Wave -> Low Pass Filter -> OTT -> more EQ as a general basis for the sound. You'd probably wanna use Unison on the initial saw wave patch for more fatness.

It's not by choice (I'm using because it's probably one of the best values for your money synth wise but I'd prob rather use Massive or Serum to be honest) but I've been using KV331 Synthmaster a ton recently. I picked it up for I think $30 through both the academic discount and the 50% Black Friday deal but even then it's worth the $60 for the regular academic license.

I'll say this..... It does A LOT of different types of stuff. Hell I barely even use the non subtractive and wavetable stuff in it and I'm still impressed with the sheer amount of stuff packed into it. What I don't like is the user interface, which I've gotten used to but is seriously not really all that good. It's easily the biggest weakness with the thing and why I'm guessing more people aren't using it. Assigning modulation is pretty bad since you have to go through a very un-intuitive mod matrix rather than just dragging the mods like Massive or Serum, and other factors like the 2 different types of LFOs and Envelopes (you've have 4 LFOs and 4 Envelopes for each of the 2 Layers (2 OSCs each) AND 4 LFOs that are global but you can assign LFOs from either layer so it's basically 12 global LFOs arranged ass-backwardsly)

If you wanna get one synth for cheapsies or are just looking for an extremely versatile synth (a modular or something like Zebra2 will have more but those aren't cheap) , it's easily the one to get by far, but be prepared to wrangle with a very confusing interface.

Finished Tracks / phatscout - Warpspeed [Future/Dubstep/I dunno]
« on: March 04, 2016, 04:07:01 am »

I've been working on this one for a while and I'm finally ready to say it's done (to be honest, it's less because I feel I've done "all that I can" and more "I couldn't figure out how to get the mix to sound better so screw it here it is")

What do y'all think?

Alright, so normally I wouldn't go around bumping wip threads based on minor changes but since I pretty redid the entire second drop, I thought I'd bump the post again to see what y'all think?

Put the drums in half time and add a "whut" chant on the offbeat :P

OK jokes aside (even though I'm only half joking when I say that) I like the overall "feel" of the track but I feel like the snare/clap doesn't have enough "presence" in the mix. I guess what I'm trying to say is that maybe you should try adding another clap on the 2s and 4s (so I'd be 1 2 3 4) but place the sample 10 - 20ms before the snare giving it a sense of groove in relation to the rest of the beat.

WIPs / Re: A quick progressive drop I made need some feedback (updated)

The kick is verrry low in the mix and is barely audible to me, which is kind of a big problem because the kick needs to be fairly upfront in proghouse. I like the melody but the main synth seems kinda.... corny I guess? I dunno it feels too mid rangey to me.

Alright so this is something I've been working on for a bit. Mainly I don't quite know what to do for the second drop and the mix is kinda ehhhhhh..... but I wanna know what y'all think of this.

Finished Tracks / phatscout - Breakdown (Electro/Fidget House)
« on: January 29, 2016, 04:54:05 am »

Here's the finished version of a wip I posted here some time ago that got fairly positive reception from you folks. It's a fidgety club type song which isn't actually usually the type of stuff I do but hey, it's fun. What do y'all think of it?

Yo I did a trap remix of the Windows 95 startup (https://soundcloud.com/phatscout/ninteyfive-click-buy-for-free-download), so it's cool to see more Windows remixes lol

Anyways, mood/groove wise you're off to a fantastic start, but sonically I can't help but feel that the bass is kinda muddy and lacking? Like, there doesn't really seem to be a solid bass in the mix (I'm hearing something that sounds reesey, but it's not really coming through and feel kinda muddy) and there's no really solid sub or low-mid bass in there.

WIPs / Some dirty/funky electro house diddy

This is a bit more "bangery" and dumb than the usual stuff I've been putting out recently but what the hell, I wanted to see what y'all thought of it. I was going for sort of a fidget house throwback sound but it kinda approaches on the territory of the dutchy type stuff that I'm not really a fan of so I'm not really all that sure where to take it to be honest.

It seems to me that the main woodblock sounds in your drop aren't quite in key.... What you've got in it right now is (B - B - B - B -  A# - G#) when (B - B - B - B - G - F#) would work better harmonically imo.

Also, everything is way too compressed and the kick doesn't have enough "punch" to it because it's attack has been flattened out by the compression.

http://illformed.org/ The original version of dBlue Glitch is great for this kinda stuff, it's free too. Glitch 2 is $60 bucks and I've heard good things about it, though I'm not sure how it compares to Sugar Bytes Effectrix, which also does this kinda stuff. Sugar Bytes also does Turnado which is good for this kinda stuff, though it's more for realtime performance like Stutter Edit.

Edit: Also hey Xilent, I remember when you features 1ft on that stream you did. Just wanted to say thanks burh
