Sound Design / ODESZA - Last Night Arp
« on: April 27, 2017, 05:32:56 am »
Just curious if anyone had any idea how to achieve the "computer arp" sound at 0:52 and also throughout.

I've tried messing around with square waves, but I was unable to pinpoint how to make it sound the way it does.

I don't have any other interview's of him talking about his production in specific, but I'm sure they're out there.

Creating the "lofi" sound is actually not as hard as people make it out to be. If you've ever heard a song off of Views by Drake, all of the songs are produced by Noah "40" Shebibe and have this sound to them. He's kind of infamous for this lo-fi underwater-ish sound, and his processing techniques are not that advanced.

In an interview, he states about how his drums are not highpassed, they are downsampled. So instead of a filter turning down frequencies, the high end frequencies on the drums don't even exist.

I've messed around with this technique in Ableton using a high pass filter and redux, and it actually creates a very cool effect. The biggest part of creating good lo-fi drums though in my opinion is good sample selection.

Hope this could give some insight!

The Rickenbacker Bass is an excellent Kontakt library. I have personally used it myself, and it sounds great.

If you don't have Kontakt, you could also try Guitar Rig 5, which has some great distortion presets in it for both guitars and basses.

Sound Design / Re: EQing in white noise with supersaw chords, advice?
« on: October 02, 2016, 06:22:29 am »
When layering supersaws or any synths in fact its pretty important that you make sure that you have a reason for every layer. If you have 4 or 5 layers of supersaws that are all taking up the same frequency range, it's going to possibly mud up the mix and have less dynamics. Voicing is super important in this.

On terms of white noise, something I like doing is either band or highpassing the actual white noise in its own channel. (this gives you a lot of control over what frequencies you're hitting as well as how loud the frequencies are going to be)

If you really want white noise that cuts through your mix, try having less (NOT NONE) volume coming from the super saws in around 15khz+ range. If you get the mixing right, it will be just subtle enough that you'll be able to hear it while it still blends in with the other layerings as well.

Best of luck!

From what I can hear, they sound like some kind of monophonic supersaw/bass with a bandpass and distortion. They also have a very fast envelope on the pitch that makes that clicky type noise.

Hope that helps a bit.
Best of luck!

Sound Design / Reverb Techniques
« on: September 21, 2016, 05:27:41 pm »
Just curious about anybody's techniques for using reverb on different sounds. I tend to struggle with finding reverbs that fit with the sound they're reverberating, so I was curious if anybody had any cool techniques. (creating verbs that fit things like snares vs verbs that fit synths)

I was curious if anybody had any idea on how to make the bass that hits on the first kick of the drop. I don't know if it's a modulate wave form with filters and such, or just a string of something like 1/8 or 1/16 notes.

Here's the link

I've been working on this the past couple days, and I kind of am stuck on what I should do next. Feel free to leave feedback or any ideas.

(P.S Sorry for the quality, clypt seems to like to compress the shit out of their uploads. I promise the WAV sounds better lol)

Finished Tracks / Mallard - Cymatics Contest Entry
« on: June 28, 2016, 03:06:03 am »
I did this little remix for a contest hosted by Cymatics. Due to soundcloud audio compression, the stream doesn't sound very good.

I'm open to feedback :)

Sound Design / High Pitched Dubstep Scream
« on: June 23, 2016, 01:41:28 am »
I know this is probably something super simple, but I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to make this scream-style lead.
It appears at 1:21 in the song. I tried doing some stuff with waveshaping, but nothing seemed to sound nice in higher octaves.

Here is the remix: https://youtu.be/vSNS6Y12g60?t=1m21s

Thanks!

The drop at 0:42 has this kind of bit crushed sounding bass.
Any ideas on how to make something like it?

Just curious if anybody had any idea on how to create something that sounds like the bass heard in Haywyre's Everchanging (Specifically when the main lead switches)
Here's the video from monstercat, I've cued it to the sound but for referance it's at 1:11.

Sound Design / Re: Marshmello vocal synth?

Yup. Just drag any sample in to Kontakt and you can use it as a sampler. It's pretty cool, and it gives you alot of options for stretching samples and what not. I'm pretty sure it's part of the factory library.

Here's a video on how to do it > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1siHxJisWEY&ab_channel=macProVideoDotCom

I want to say that he's using some find of chords with a phaser, but it sounds so unique. Definitely a french house style kind of lead.
