Finished Tracks / Portfolio l House/Electronic/Experimental
« on: June 01, 2017, 12:19:03 am »
Hey there!

Tomorrow am handing over my portfolio at a college to study music production. If they're interested, I'll be invited to take my exams.

I just applied the finishing touch and I would love to hear some feedback from you guys. One track is a House track, the 2nd one is more Electronic (inspired by Flume). The last one is Electronic as well, but a bit more experimental.

Portfolio Playlist

Be the jury, and tell me what you think.  :)

Thanks in advance!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Sample packs with kicks like Flume
« on: February 17, 2017, 09:33:49 pm »
Hi all

Today Skin Companion EP II got released by Flume. The kick drum in his track Depth Charge is just amazing.

To me it sounds like a kinda analog kick drum processed through distortion.

Where can I get these more analog sounding kick drums? I remember he once talked about being influenced by hip hop beats, so I have a feeling a might have to look there.  If anyone can point me to good sample pack (companies) based on user experience, would be great.

Am I also right about the processing? Anything else that might be done?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Best Future Bass(?) sample pack companies
« on: December 26, 2016, 03:04:25 pm »
Hi guys

First of all a Merry Christmas to all of you!

So for the past few months I've been digging the so called 'Future Bass'. However it's dropped on a lot of music which make me question the genre. For me it's electronic music with Hip Hop and Trap influences like 808s and rhythm. It sometimes involves a singer instead of a rapper. Examples are Flume, Cashmere Cat and Louis The Child.

Now to come to the point of the subject. What are some sample companies selling drum packs that fit my taste? I noticed some songs have live drums, which sometimes sound kinda distorted and create this "booming" impact when the kick hits.

Thanks advance & enjoy your Christmas

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / [Q]Unlocking your creativity
« on: May 21, 2016, 07:37:08 pm »
Hey everyone

Probably this will sound familiar for some. Sometimes you can sit for ages in front of your PC and nothing. Sometimes you finally get something, end up hating it and eventually you started with project number 9000. Well yeah, that's the situation I'm currently in.
I can remember the first days I started to produce, I could make tracks as if it was nothing. Now it feels the more knowledge I have, the less creative I am. It feels like all theories and rules are restricting me. First I was just bashing every white key because I knew it was either 'a' or 'C'. No worries about what must be done and what can't be done. I was simply doing what my ears felt like doing.
I'm curious about the ones with the same struggles and how they solved it or are trying to solve it.

Cheers!

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / [Q] Making dancy drops (House tracks)
« on: March 21, 2016, 06:49:49 pm »
Hi guys!

I'm having troubles with making my drops feel dancy. When I listen to this track (an the next one too) by Martin Garrix, I can feel the drive to dance. I lack this in my own projects. And I'm trying to find a solution to this. It also causes me to finish my projects less frequently.

I posted a similar post but from a different angle. That one was more about my melodies but also a bit about this subject.

Do you have any tips? I have a private SC playlist with 3 unfinished tracks. Maybe it gives you also an idea of what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi guys!

I've lately been very inspired to get behind my DAW and make some tracks.
Yet, I'm stuck with the process of making my tracks. Lately I can't seem to be satisfied with any melody I make. I look up to Martin Garrix so much! I love his melodies, and I try focus so much on it to make them really nice. But yea, I never get satisfied. Especially when I want to use it for a drop. My drop doesn't feel 'dancy' with it.

Mostly I blame my melody for it, but lately I wonder if it's something else. Something else I'm doing wrong which just blocks me.
My workflow: Chords -> Melody -> Kick and sidechained sub-bass & chords.

Do you have any tips? Or things you might think I'm doing wrong? If you're curious I made little playlist with 3 unfinished tracks which maybe gives you an auditive idea. As you notice it's house music, which might change the focus of priorities and tips.

Thanks in advance!

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / [Q] Making bass lines
« on: March 21, 2016, 06:40:05 pm »
Hi all!

I'm here to ask you tips to make better bass lines. I mostly make house music and a lot of these kind of tracks (mostly the ones which get labeled as commercial EDM) have very simple yet well done bass lines. I know it's mostly the root note of each chords, but still whenever I want to make a drop I can't seem to get a nice bass line on my melody.

Do you have any tips what helps you in your productions?

Thanks all!

Sound Design / [Q] How to make this sound
« on: February 20, 2016, 09:48:00 pm »
Hi guys!

I wonder how to make this sound. It's the sound that rises at 0:30 8 bars long, also in the build-up at 1:15.

To me it sounds like a whitenoise but I don't know the processing. It makes me think of a train which is trying to stop and the breaks are making that scratchy noise.

I'm looking forward to your solutions!

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / [Q] Composition & Workflow
« on: February 10, 2016, 01:33:48 am »
Hi everyone

I've a little question about workflow towards composition.

So basically when I make music I start with the chords and melody to make up an idea. This idea is then the worked out into a break and chorus.
The thing is, usually I end up with a project which has no intro/outro and I say to myself:"Those two parts mostly contain elements of the drop (speaking mostly for commercial dance music), so I'll wait with them."

But what if it's all the way around? What if actually the drop contains elements from  the intro?

I would like to hear your thoughts. Knowing your workflow after you've got your idea, is surely interesting.
My projects usually sound like ideas arranged rather than an evolution of sounds, even if I try hard with automated parameters.

Curious what you guys have to say!

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / [Q] Identifying a song's influences
« on: January 24, 2016, 05:40:29 pm »
Hi guys

I'm still really inspired by this song called The Only Way Is Up by Martin Garrix & Tiƫsto. It's simply an amazing 128 BPM four-on-the-floor dance track.
However I strongly feel there are influences from other genres close. I'm talking about the sound design in the drop more specifically. The timbre it gives really gives me this strong feeling it's influenced from something else than House. Maybe trance, I don't know...

What do you thinking guys? Should I dig into the old trance music?

Cheers!

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / [Q] Friend starting
« on: January 10, 2016, 07:09:44 pm »
Hi

I had no clue at all where to post this, but I thought this would be the best place.

A friend of mine wants to start out making music. He feels inspired by Trouble Andrew and Odesza. However I don't know where to point him to if it comes towards tutorials in the style of these two examples. I'm more House focused so I only know tutorials about House (and dubstep from the past)...

I've already pointed him towards tutorial vids to get to know his DAW better.

I hope someone can help me out a bit.

Cheers!

Mixing/Mastering / [Q] Having just enough layers
« on: January 10, 2016, 12:30:39 am »
Hi

When or how do you determine if something has enough layers? Having layers can fill up your sound spectrum, but it can also over do it.

I know that layers of different sound textures creates a new texture as a whole. However I catch myself putting a lot layers with the excuse But everything adds something the the sound as whole...

Cheers!

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / [Ql Creating (logical) melodies
« on: January 10, 2016, 12:21:43 am »
Hi

I'm currently stuck on making melodies. I manage to make nice sounding chord progressions, but my melodies fail. I am able to make melodies but all of them sound uninteresting and unlogical

Some people advise to start with your bass and drums. This way you can build a certain groove and adapt a melody to it.
However some of my inspiring songs are very simple in that area (sidechained root notes, rides on the kick, off-beat clap).

I'm curious what workflow you all have it comes to this!

Cheers!

You Might Like... / DVTCH NORRIS - Caught Up (Prod. Rascal)
« on: January 09, 2016, 07:20:47 pm »
Hi

I'm here with something different than EDM. I'm sharing my friend's beat called Caught Up. I'm usually very picky if it comes to Hiphop/Rap but he nailed it right there.
Listen & enjoy!
