Sound Design / Stretching a vocal
« on: January 29, 2016, 11:48:53 am »
When I have a vocal, the last word of the vocal is Ohhh, but that Ohh is only 3 seconds. Is there any way to stretch that to oooooooooooooooh for like 4 bars? or anything else. If I just stretch it (in FL) it won't work because it simply gets pitched down..

Hi folks,

I am going to buy studio monitors very soon. Now I want to make some acoustic changes to my room as well. But my room pretty much really sucks for acoustic treatment I think, but maybe some of you could help me out..

This is my room:

Yellow: Windows
Red: Door
Blue wall: From ground to 0,50m is straight, after that it´s slanting.

Sound Design / Synth Secrets - The theory behind sound synthesis
« on: January 10, 2016, 02:57:45 pm »
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/allsynthsecrets.htm

Soundonsound has a very old article series called Synth Secrets. It is definitely not the most fun thing to read. But I would really recommend everyone to at least read the first 10 parts, because after I did my sound design has been on the next level ever since.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / How to organize automation in FL Studio?
« on: January 09, 2016, 10:28:57 am »
Hi folks,

I know everyone has a different workflow regarding automation. But this is the most hindering factor in my workflow and it really ruins my time. Really I am getting now to the point that I want to switch daws just because of the way I use automation in FL..

So I was wondering, how do you guys do it? What are your ways in organizing automation in FL Studio?

Sound Design / Production terms
« on: January 08, 2016, 11:06:14 am »
Hi all, I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread with all the production related terms with descriptions in one place.

Please post every term with description you know and I will edit them in this post.

Filter - Removes frequencies from a sound
LFO - Low-frequency oscillation/oscillator
Noise - not exactly a waveform, but a source of sound produced by a certain colour of noise.
Oscillator - Oscillators produce the original sound which you can hear in your patches, which is then fed through the rest of the signal path in the synthesizer.
Pitch - The quality that makes it possible to judge sounds as "higher" and "lower"
Pulse Wave - a variation on the above, the pulse wave is half as wide as a square wave, and has the unique ability to have its width modulated (called ‘Pulse Width Modulation').
Saw Wave - shaped like the teeth on a saw blade, this produces a very common sharp, biting tone.
Sine Wave - a smooth rising and falling shape (like a horizontal ‘S'), this produces a mild, soft tone.
Square Wave - looks like a (near) perfect square, produces a reedy, hollow sound.
Triangle Wave - unsurprisingly shaped like a triangle, this sounds somewhere in between a saw wave and a sine wave.
Vibrato - The violin type sound made by assigning an lfo to the pitch by a small amount.

Www.edmprod.com is a blog that really changed the way I look at producing. This guy named Sam Matla has written a lot of articles on the mental side of music production, and I also recommend listening to his podcast which is basically a talkshow with different producers about music production.

Sound Design / Quick Tip: Using volume automation on your layers
« on: January 07, 2016, 12:28:05 pm »
Just a quick tip, I just discovered this and I thought it might help some of you.

I had a melody with notes from D5 to C7. And my lead was made of 2 layers, where one of them was lower.

Now in the middle of the melody I had the volumes right and it was a very nice fat lead. But when the melody was in the lower notes the lead had too much lows and in the higher notes the lead was very thin and bass lacking. So I just volume automated the lower layer with the notes.
