WIPs / Re: Took your advice, and this is what I came up with!
« on: August 31, 2016, 07:55:27 pm »
This is fantastic! I can really tell you've been absorbing a lot from the forums. Your mixdown is almost perfect - my only point to mention is that your piano is a bit overcompresssed and can be a bit loud in the mix at points.

Beyond that, I'm seriously stunned at the production on this track - I can't wait to hear the finished product!

edit: also, hope you don't mind that I moved it to the WIPs section. I know you're asking about mixing advice, but it's my job to help prevent confusion about stuff like this, so people don't just post their songs anywhere instead of in the designated areas. :P

thank you very much! i think i'll send you the end product via direct message when i publish it! or do you think this would be okay to send to a label?

Far from done, and far from perfect. Would like to know what I'm doing right and wrong in terms of mixing!

Mixing/Mastering / Where do YOUR drums sit on the stereo field?

Where do YOUR drums sit on the stereo field? Super wide? Or not so much.

Another way to improve stereo width (and I think you were trying to get to) would be the concept of double tracking - recording the same performance twice and hard panning the signals left and right. If you're doing this with a singer or a person playing guitar, the minor inconsistencies between the performances will change the overall signal enough so that when you play them back at the same time with one in each speaker, you get this very wide signal that tickles your eardrums.

If you're using a synthesizer (especially a VST plugin), you can simulate that effect by removing certain oscillator retriggers or otherwise enabling a free-flowing oscillator, then recording the signal's output twice and panning them like normal.

HEY! This is kinda what I'm doing!! Thanks Mussar. Appreciated.

Anyone know a good mellotron emulator I can find? Preferably with nice sounding string/flute sounds.

it's not going to do any thing if you're not altering the signals that are being panned and kept center.

You're going to sum that source signal to mono if you do things like that.

what are you looking to get out of this technique you use?

Get more width on the stereo field?

Mixing/Mastering / Panning. One Left, One right, One Center?
« on: August 22, 2016, 08:50:24 pm »
So I do this thing on Ableton where I make two channels playing the same signal. I pan one to the left by say, about 24db and one to the right by the same amount. Should I keep a (quieter) 'center' channel?

Sound Design / Re: Chord Vocings/super saw sound design
« on: August 22, 2016, 02:41:40 pm »
Hi, been trying to make supersaws for melodic dubstep like culture code seven lions etc. When I make supersaws they always seem to either be to low and muddy/lack clarity or to high/thin/harsh. Even with layering multiple supersaws/synth layers still seem to have the wrong problem and I feel like it could be chord voicings. Can some please give some advice tips on chords for supersaws and how they process them, thanks :)

Have you been EQ-ing properly?

It depends on the genre.

In progressive house yes.
In uplifting trance yes.
In dubstep no.
In d&b no.

See where I'm going here?

Yes! Thank you.

greeting i left you comment on sc :)

Thanks for the feedback!!

Are snares and kick supposed to be triggered at the same time or is it normal to delay the snare by about 0.01ms?

Massive or Serum would be great!

I'll give it a try!

Mixing/Mastering / Sidechaining the snare, to the kick.

Do you any of you sidechain the snare to the kick so that when the snare and kick hit at the same time, the snare is given a bit more definition than the kick?

Well, you CAN have a momentary pause for 1/4 of a bar. Doesn't porter like to do that?
