Finished Tracks / Finished my first track in a few months!! (Bass House)
« on: February 06, 2017, 09:24:13 pm »
Started working on this one really strong a few months ago, but then couldn't find out where I wanted to take it.

But I was inspired! I cut out the last 3 minutes I had and came up with a totally new drop after hearing a crazy techno set in Amsterdam this weekend.

This is what I came up with: https://soundcloud.com/peterlambe8/get-down-final

Decided to just consider it finished and move on. Please let me know what you think!

Anyone have any opinions on the song itself? I am going to finish it probably tonight.

Many (if not most) lack fluency in music theory. Thats advantageous to you because most producers dont have that avenue of tools.

Its easier to make melodies, rhythmic patterns, and chord progressions with theory. It took me roughly 30 mins(not including sound design and mixing) to make this piece of song:

(disclaimer: im a better musician than I am a producer.)

That song is not possible without music theory.

Why is this not possible without music theory? I would be inclined to disagree with you

Hey man,

Congrats on starting out with production! It's a really daunting task and I remember when I first started out... anyways I think the best way to start out is to try and avoid making original productions like that and rather go for remixes, edits, mashups, and even remakes of other artists songs you like! That way, you learn how the type of music you like is "generally" layered, progressed, structured, and it will help you develop the basics of arrangement!

Also, I strongly encourage you to focus your sound design and attention on only ONE vst. I recommend Sylenth1, Massive, Serum, or Harmour (if you are using FL Studio). Otherwise, if the above VSTs are out of your budget, it's perfectly ok to start out with what your DAW has included! But seriously focus on one and really LEARN it. Read the manual, watch tutorials online, maybe invest in some presets. It will help so much if you do this. Also, purchasing a sample pack of drum sounds will be very very very useful starting out because finding nice drums or god forbid creating them yourself is very difficult and I do not recommend it.

Good luck producing! Any and all of your questions going forward can be answered in this lovely forum :) Cheers :)

Thanks for your reply. The next track I work on will definitely follow a guide/reference track for sound and arrangement.

syncopated rythmns.

Turn off the grid when making em.

Can you elaborate on this more?

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: How to construct a track
« on: February 04, 2016, 11:46:19 pm »
Often, your approach to building a track will depend on your style. For example, in Nicky Romero's "In the Studio" he states how he begins his tracks with a kick, and will build around that.

...

Personally I enjoy writing melodies. I produce a lot of big room/electro, and have recently focused a lot on future house. To me the melody of a song is the most memorable aspect, and I like to build my track around the melody for that reason.

Same! I always start with the melody. I don't do it on purpose that's just how it goes usually.

How many of you edm producers or any producer for that matter, who does not have any music background whatsoever?

I have no musical background at all...

Thoughts? Opinions?

It's not required of you. Even greats like Eric Prydz don't know music theory but look at what they create.

But hey, if you get stuck -- learn music theory! I started in September and it isn't hard if you're dedicated!

WIPs / My (Progressive House?) Song - Second track
« on: February 04, 2016, 09:26:50 pm »
I've been producing since January, and you can find my first track on my profile.

Here is the link to this song..I think it is progressive house. I just sort of went with it: https://soundcloud.com/peterlambe8/demo-2

I am going to add another 4 bars before the breakdown and add cool elements to make it interesting among other things. What do you think so far?

So good for a first attempt! Keep it up

Any chance you can send me that vocal or tell me where you got it from?

Thanks

It was a sample that came with FL Studio!

Very cool! Inspiring actually.. Makes me want to do something chill like this.
It takes a lot of control, to hold back from making melodies more complicated -- for me anyway. :)  And not layering too much stuff, and keeping things, well, chill. Nice work on that.
About the flute sound -- I like the initial one at 2:30ish, but when the higher pitch comes in at 3:00 -- that seems to me like it'd be better as a whole nother synth sound, or maybe it does just need some EQ. Not sure.
The sub in the last section was just too subby for me. I thought a truck was driving by, and it didn't do anything musically for me. I like the idea though -- it could be fixed for sure.
Great job!

Haha it sounded like a truck! I was trying to make that part loud and heavy but I failed.

So do you think I should continue with this type of sound? Rather than trying to fit into a genre, maybe I could develop this type of sound.

Oh so I just drag it down to below 0db right? Until it sounds good?

I guess that's one way to put it. Maybe instead of thinking "until it sounds good" (because afterall, your track already sounds good), think of it as just lowering the irritation and sharpness away from what is already working. You don't want to take it so far down that it starts to actually alter the sound (or else you're getting into actual sound design). You want it down just enough that it still sounds like itself, but just has that "edge" rubbed out. Does that make sense?

As you sweep, you are listening for areas that make your ears go "ouch! that frequency of my flute is WAY louder than it needs to be compared to the rest of it, let's just take that down a bit..."

I see what you mean! So, the flute and some bass parts need some work. I'll let you know when I make those corrections

Ah ok. So when I identity the problemproblematical frequencies what would I do to in order to cut out only that frequency?

You do the opposite - just create a notch or "dive" (with a steep q) that cuts that problem frequency a bit.

Except, don't cut it so crazy like that example. lol 2-3 db is enough in some cases. More aggressiveness needed in other cases. Takes some experimenting. You can use this method to carve out space for other instruments, even if the frequencies aren't resonating out of control.

beautiful sound. I like it! Contemplative...

Some great decisions and combinations happening for this track. It feels full and rich, and yet deceptively simple.

A few technical issues to work out, such as the bass areas, and some problem frequencies to tame that are resonating just a little too much, but obviously you have some natural talent if this is your first go!

Thanks a lot lyteside. How would you suggest I fix those problems?

honing in on your problem frequencies will be pretty painless. When you're using your EQ on individual channels, look into some of the high areas - sweep back n' forth with a steep Q curve until you hear them... should be around 2k and above.

Ah ok. So when I identity the problemproblematical frequencies what would I do to in order to cut out only that frequency?
