Defeating Writer's Block: The age old Dilemma.
« on: January 08, 2016, 04:09:32 am »
I often come across writers block after I finish a song or project that I have been working on exclusively for a long time. I usually try and take a 2-3 day break from production to listen to new music and get the creative juices flowing. I also find it helpful try to leave my house, if I can, and interact with people I like being around.

What keeps your ideas fresh?

Tbh, the more I do non-music stuff, the more ideas I get for music stuff. Sometimes I'll just be out for lunch or something and a melody will pop into my head. I think if you try to come up with ideas you won't but if you don't try you will, you feel me

I like to try and make a bunch of different ideas and the ones that I like the best I'll work on until they're finished. I'll usually leave my incomplete ideas alone and then revisit them later on.

Sometimes I will compose a section for a song that I'm working on...and I'll like it but it doesn't quite fit so then I re-save the project and split it up into different songs.

Occasionally I will have the majority of a track but it just doesn't seem good enough to release and I'll let it sit for awhile and I'll come back to it and rework it into something else - I've gotten a lot of fresh ideas from this.

I like to work on skills that I know I'm bad at. Sometimes it warrants a cool result. Ex: I'm not that good at chopping and flipping samples. When I'm in a rut with my original music, I start sampling. Other times, I just noodle around in a key I don't usually play in. Restrictions can also help (like not using a certain VST or using a specific set of samples for the entire song). Writer's block is the best opportunity to challenge yourself imo!
