Splice has a great list of free plugins!  I'd definitely check that out.

+1 on the Splice list.  Of those, most often I use Voxengo Span to check levels and frequency spread, TAL-bitcrusher (lightly) on snares/hats/percussion, and TAL-Filter-II because I've been too cheap to buy LFO Tool (I know I should just make the purchase).  You can get also some cool distortion out of CamelCrusher but I think they've stopped distributing it.  I probably still have the install file so PM me if you want it

Cool or not, we have a couple of freebies that are simple but pretty useful. I particularily like the "duck" feature of the delay, myself. :)

They're only available in 32-bit, but if you can bridge them, Variety of Sound make some amazing freeware. Incredibly generous given how great these little plugins all sound.

Tokyo Dawn Records do free plugins as well. TRD Nova is a very powerful mixing and mastering tool, as is Kotelnikov.

It can be a little hit-and-miss, but this blog keeps a good track of newly-released freeware. Their yearly Top lists highlight a lot of great, free gear.

Build it, and they will come.

Start out with Voxango and get stuff like SPAN from there, and other really cool surgical tools for free http://www.voxengo.com/

Yeah Xfer records do a really good free bunch. Same as Voxengo.

I agree, Definitely TAL! holy crap their synths are amazing

AND! The Fish Fillets pack! it has I think, the best DeEsser in existence called SPITFISH! (Though sometimes the latency on that plugin can act up, still an amazing plugin to have) - http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php?item=2&subItem=5

A couple synths I would recommend would be Eclipsis and Sonigen Modular. Both are worth giving a try.
