Vocal pitching in logic?
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:32:09 pm »
I can't find a decent audio pitching VST that doesn't cost a ton of money. All the built in units in Logic are horrible. Any suggestions?

Some of this I touched on in another thread but: I use Ableton btw... If you want to do pitched down vocal (skrillex style...) settings are: Complex Pro, set your transpose to -12 (one octave down) and change the formants to ≈0%. Once you change the Formants you will notice how clear the pitched down vocals become. For pitched-up go to +6 or +12 depending on how chipmunk you want to go.

I do see you said Logic but sometimes people have more than one DAW  ;)

I agree, Logics build in pitch shifting is awful.

This is by far the best pitch shifter out there (Cubase & Ableton base theirs on the same algorithm)

zplane Elastique Pitch
https://products.zplane.de/elastique-pitch-2

I use it all the time.

Quik Quak Pitchwheel is pretty good given it's fair price (50£)

And you can shift the formants of the sound individually if you want to.

I've been finding the Logic's built in Vocal Transformer pretty good on monophonic material. It's actually one the few Logic's stock plug-ins I use quite regularly.

I use Little Alterboy (got it during their SXSW promotion last year); it's got a very clean interface and I think the formant shifting is fairly clean. I use it to add harmonies on vocals, make a shoutbox, or use it as a vocoder/talkbox effect.

Have you already tried AUPitch? It's built in to apple computers but isn't a stock logic plugin. Not sure how well it performs with formant material on things like vocals, but I prefer it over the others that come with Logic.

Yeah! This is the first place to go. AU Pitch is tucked away in a weird location of the plugin menu. Try this guy (if you haven't already).

I've tried it, and personally I don't think it sounds very good.

Fair enough. I usually start with AU Pitch to dial in the right amount adjustment. Then I transform the file with the Sample Editor. Are you saying the Sample Editor results aren't cutting it?

I have always avoided vocal chops because of Logic's bad algorithm...I'm excited to try AU pitch!!! :D

Have you tried using Flex Pitch in Logic? It shows the pitch of the audio sample on the piano roll, and from there you can adjust the formants and the pitch there. Though it's not as intuitive as Ableton, I find that I can get some nice results there better than any of the stock plug-ins for sure.

The vocal transformer plugin in Logic sounds pretty good to my ears for monophonic signals. For monophonic signals there's also QuikQuak Pitchwheel (that Lido uses for his pitched vocals) and SoundToys Little AlterBoy (that also has a pretty cool Decapitator-style drive on it)

Yea man, I Love logic, but it does lack that. I use SoundShifter & I know Morgan Page and some others do too. It's good for automating pitch at least, snares/risers/vocal chops/etc. But I wish Logic had something like Simpler in Abelton.
~And so he took his pain & turned it into something beautiful. Something that people could connect to.
