To Nexus or not to Nexus... that is the question
« on: January 07, 2016, 07:29:08 pm »
ok being a low to semi succesful producer now for a few years it has come to my attention that no vst has suffered as much controversy as reFX' Nexus.
yes it is basically just a multilayered sampler but as a musician vs tech geek does that really matter?.
i use it very rearly though i do have it but mostly extra pad layers. but i think its solely because of the stigma that has been surrounding it over the years.
is it the easy way out or is it a vible tool to get that extra mile ?

I don't mind nexus but I know that some people aren't a fan of the lack of control you have on the sound. you can add fx but that's it you can't change the actual wavetables.

I don't have it personally, and its never held me back.

However, I think its best used to layer other sounds with. Judging from watching other videos, or at peoples studios, I always see people use Nexus as their core sound for a lead or something, then add a few layers on top of it to fatten it up, and it always sounds fantastic.

Nexus is great, fact you can just throw it in and some really well designed sounds available instantly, I use it a lot. The only downside is that it can be quite expensive once you start adding the expansion packs. I'd say its worth the investment only if you got the cash for it.

Nexus is great for layering. I wouldn't use it on it's own. It got a lot of stick because many people would use just a preset and make that the only thing in the track. Use it wisely, don't abuse it.

There's no wrong in using anything like Nexus. It's how you use it to make your track special.

Why not use Nexus? Nexus is like using presets.

I use Nexus to layer my pads.

I donť like it. I almost can tell when hearing Nexus-ish piano every time. It's foolish reason, but it's made by guys behind some pretty cheesy euro-dancefloor tracks... I think it's audible. I tried it back then and everything was big, and fat and like ... forcingly effective ... I just got tired of it. Same reason I left Vengeance samples btw.

Vanguard! That was great reFX product!

Yeah, nexus can be a great tool for layering pads, leads, even plucks, but the sound themselves are usually meh.

I have a rule where I only allow myself to use presets for analog instrument (pianos, organs, guitars). I use nexus for that. For everything else, I do it from scratch. I just feel better with myself when I have something done that sounds good and I know I sound designed it by myself.

Layering nexus's synths can also be a good idea for some, but I wouldn't advise anyone to use a nexus preset as a main sound because those synths are everywhere and they can make your production sound cheap.  :-\

Some of Nexus' sounds are fantastic and can't be matched by other synths.  Some of the orchestral sounds, and screaming leads are fantastic.  When I want a sharp, fat, top lead that will bring out a melody, I think Nexus.  I understand why someone would take heat for building up a track that is built of entirely identifiable nexus sounds... but layering the plugin and weaving it into your track should be no problem from a musical, and creative standpoint.  (As you're saying)

We always have to keep in mind that so many people who are fans of music don't even know what Nexus is.  Still, I'll stick with "layer it in".

I actually demo'd Nexus at a buddy's house, and I honestly didn't like a number of the sounds from my own standpoint and what I usually like to create. The factor of it also being just a sampler with some sounds was overall a turn-off, but I have to admit, a number of the pianos were incredibly well, hell, even the cheesy ones, The orchestral sounds like Brien mentioned were also top notch.

I wouldn't blame anyone for using Nexus, but personally me, just seems like a turn off when I can have full control in synthesizers.

Not worth it IMO.

Money can be better spent with a few KONTAKT libs ;)
Stop overdoing shit. Stop downloading new plugins for the sake of it. Your fancy stereo enhancer won't make you any better musically, your hard work will.
