Field recordings is the great way to fill the space in track. Someties it could be a begging, something, that's giving you a theme/idead for a track. Some use it as something in the background or barely noticable at all, other like it to be really loud and obvious. It's up to you, I guess. For me that was only 1 time I actually properly used for kinda rainy song. Even used a sound of thunder as hit/whoosh effect. And would love to get myself a portable recorded :\

I really like freesound.org. They have a huge library of user submitted sounds that you can search for specific things and it includes what it was recorded with and the quality of the file. As for using foley, I like following a tip I saw from deadmau5 a while back. Here's the Reddit thread discussing the interview: https://www.reddit.com/r/edmproduction/comments/2bk29v/deadmau5s_gritty_compression_technique_what/?

I've been working on a track where it had some rain type feels so I put it on an audio track and side chained it to the master so it would come fill the gaps and add to the vibe

Btw it seems like sound of the rain is most populard kind of thing :D And all kinds of city noises on the 2nd place.

And thanks for that. Such a good idea to not use white noise as a filler, but sound of.. wind? Nature? This sort of stuff. It should be a good way to make tracks feel less "electric".

Maaan, I felt in love with foley actually. Freesound is cool when you need something specific that you can't record on your own, but the real joy is to do it yourself. I carry cheap but cool little H1 in bagpack. It's nice to be able to record any kind of cool noise. It got me to point of buying (for me kinda expansive) dynamic mic just to be able to record some home made percussion.

It's also really cool way to get un-stuck creatively sometimes. Dunno what next? Well find some cool sounding garbage around the house and sample the sh*t out of it.
Tip: Simple down and uptuning is amazing tool. You can make your keys sounds like some heavy metal chain or something.

And yeah, rain, city. I have to admit: Guilty. :D

awesome info guys. I love freesound.org
I download from there and Neurohop forum release some crazy sample packs also. I record my own when I can I  use a little Tascam DR-05. My friend and I would literally spend days and days walking around my house recording the dogs, microwave, bags, leaves, shower and sink sounds. hahaha
I like to mix in foley sounds with my drums and i use them as a background to give more texture to the track.

What do you mean by mixing it with your drums? Do you layer hard impacts for transients?

Could be what he's meaning, however I use foley sounds as key percussion elements. Everyone uses a 4x4 kick with an off hi-hat. Make it interesting using percussion elements that you've sampled from foley packs/live recordings/the like.

instead of searching for them online, (which to be honest, defeats the purpose a bit), get a field recorder and do it yourself.  It's way more satisfying and educational.  Will be the best $200 you've spent in a while.

no I literally mix sounds in, for example a clap ill layer with sounds of pencils hitting eachother and bags getting squished. Adds great high end and texture. Usually I process the hell out of the sound and run it through grain delays and reverbs. I like adding some vinyl or grainy sounds to the high end of my kick

I can only recommend this aswell. I don't record that much myself, but whenever I feel like it could be interesting I just turn my zoom on and do something like crumble an empty chips bag next to it, put it on a clap and see what happens.

Was just talking about you in another thread, and how you build your atmospheres with foley, and such.

Having a good microphone, and a good recorder, is required and expensive.
