goals for 2017
« on: January 13, 2017, 10:28:08 pm »
ive never been one for 'resolutions,' but hell with it, i'm not happy with where im going. maybe being specific will help that. post your goals here for posterity, so we can see if we pulled through next january.

what are your musical goals for this year?
how do you plan to get there?
when?

my goal is, i want to write a body of work, probably an EP, that finally feels like "me." and i want to release it with some kind of  accompanying visual element. and i want to play a show. i'll do it by writing new music daily, and looking for the threads in the things that inspire me to figure out who i am. and also connecting with as many other artists as possible, to learn from them and grow. i want to have the release finished around July, the visuals August, and a show lined up in September.

how about you?

pretty good goals man, for me this year, i want to work hard on sound design and mixing, make everything sound sharper

Pretty much just improve on all aspects of production

also to work harder and have fun in the studio, thats important as well...

Get on a "artists to watch out for in 2018" list at the end of the year haha

I really want to produce+release a good remix by April and start putting my name out there. After that, a few more remixes by the end of the year. But I don't want to start releasing stuff until I feel I have the capability of making music that sounds somewhat professional, so that goal might have to be put on hold.

Other than that, just keep learning as much as I can.

@vinceasot - that's a good goal! what, specifically, do you plan on doing to improve your mixdowns and sound design? i struggle a lot with that personally, and am starting to try remaking tracks to learn sound design better. i'd love to hear what your ideas are! and fun is very important as well, trying to balance that myself haha.

@rixir - nice dude! what kind of stuff are you thinking of remixing? & i can definitely empathize with not wanting to rush, process is very important as is taking ur time! im more setting deadlines for myself because ive had the opposite problem of a lot of time spent with no focus/progress, but everyone has different paths! you can do it. i believe in you.

Well i think the only way to get better is to do it, so i try make alot patches on my own, look at presets for studying, and yeah just alot of practice...downloading tutorial videos, studying synthesis in general, whether its wavetable or analogue, FM. With mixing, its about experience i think, so keep making the tracks and your ears will get more stronger and trained

I really want the first thing I put out to be a Madeon or Porter remix since their music resonates the most with me, but I would definitely want to do it justice and I wouldn't want to commit to it until I felt I could make something unique. Nonsense would be cool to remix, I'd love to rework the arrangement so it builds tension like Madeon did with the live edit:
Sea of Voices or Sad Machine would be fun to remix too!

@vinceasot -
that definitely makes sense!! i really need to crack open FM synthesis, i dont even know what id use it  for but it just seems so mysterious to me.

@rixir -
that would be really cool, i love those rearrangements porter and madeon do with their songs for the live show. at the Shelter show they mashed up Icarus with Fellow Feeling and it sounded so crazy. they definitely have a good ear for different contexts of songs. best of luck to you, i cant wait to see what you make!!

@270 -
that's quite an undertaking! how are you planning on narrowing it down from that broad of a selection of ideas? do you have any ideas or themes you're leaning towards for the album? i'm excited to see how that turns out.

one of my goals is improving at music production! so if you have any tips or methods pls share!

My goal right now is to finish 2 tracks every saturday

but without focus I don't improve as fast as I would like

so I guess my goal this year is to get focused, disciplined.
