what's your album of the year?
« on: December 22, 2016, 04:46:24 pm »
its that time of year where every critic is making their lists, what about YOU? what albums stood out to you this year? why do you like them? wht are the standouts from it?

im torn between frank ocean's "blonde" and noisia's "outer edges," can't honestly decide between the two. channel orange is a classic, but frank took a super bold left turn and it worked really well. and noisia... what is there to say? id argue no one does bass music as well as they do, from a purely technical standpoint, and some of the songwriting is really creative as far as dance goes.

I really had to think hard about this, to be honest with you. I tend to take albums as they come and hold them on their own merits, so I really don't do any ranking when I listen to music. So here are some of the albums that really spoke to me the most:

Mat Zo's Self Assemble was one of the most stylistically diverse albums I listened to this year, and that drew me in.

Noisia's Outer Edges was one of the most well engineered albums I've listened to this decade, and that drew me in.

Anamanaguchi's Capsule Silence "album" showed me a new way to display an musical project and give me the video game-y nostalgia I was looking for, and that drew me in.

Kendrick Lamar's "Untitled, Unmastered" project gave me such an insight into the working process of the hip hop industry and inspired me to never be afraid of releasing imperfect music, and that drew me in.

There's a lot more, but I really don't want to take up too much space haha.

I'm with both of you on Outer Edges. I couldn't even get myself to make music for like a week after they released it because I was like "Well shit, they just did it the best it can be done."

My other pick would be Here's to Them by Rawtekk. Another super experimental, technical bass music album. Honestly haven't heard anything like it before and I love the contrast they always have between really aggressive/dark music and softer delicate sections. And I love Christine's vocals/vocal style. It was released in May and I'm still listening to some of it most days of the week now.

For me, I chose two for the album of the year. It goes to Fall Out Boy's American Beauty/American Psycho and Zedd's True Colors.
