Feeling bad musically
« on: October 25, 2016, 10:13:25 am »
So I have been trying to produce for around nearly a year now and i have improved so much in mixing and sound design wise but musically i just don't seem to move really. It makes me really annoyed because I know if i just keep going at i can get at least good mixes and sound design like im a long way off but i already understand so much but whats the point if i cant write even a simple melody. Usually i just hit random notes all i see is the professionals they just make a chord progression and just hum over it or just have melodies and ideas given in their dreams and when i try to do it i just sing the last song i heard probably not even in the same key. I'm going to ear training way harder but i just feel im just not creative enough even i love making music more anything it really messes with my head when i just feel like i dont have talent for writing melodies. idk its like i feel creative cause when i open project i have direction of what i wana make but it always generic and musically just boring and kinda wrong. I hate my subconscious for not giving me musical ideas. Can you actually write melodies or are they just given to you?

Take a drastic turn and do something completely different.

I've been making dubstep, dub, and hip hop sort of beats for a while now and i just hit a wall not to long ago.

So what i did was make some trance(sort of i suppose, but it'd be more like indie trance -_-), break beat, and a form of jazz funk.

The sound components of today's EDM, really doesn't allow for much musicality in terms of different dynamic perspectives.

Just keep working on stuff and continue to grow. You'll hit snags like this all the time, and hopefully they'll become fewer and far between.

You should recognize that doing the same thing over and over again, is good for learning. But at some point, you get rather tired of it and need a shake up.

That's not to say that you shouldn't ever return to what you started out with, but if you're continuously looking for something new, you're eventually going to be at your wits end of discovery.

Observe every thing you've done, and apply What you know now, to what you did in the past.

Constantly creating is a difficult task to do. That's why it's important to collect all of what you know and what you've did, and turn those ideas and concepts into something new.

You probably have more than enough to work with if you just sit down and collect yourself, and apply what's already existing in new ways.
Josh Huval: Honestly, the guys who are making good art are spending their time making it.

Creativity is a muscle - Exercising it is required for growth, but without a direction to go and a plan for how to perform optimally you will always be hindered.

If you're having trouble writing melodies, spend a week practicing melody writing. Go back and work on your music theory chops - good melodies have a proper amount of chord tones, passing and neighbor tones, and occasionally other non-chord tones. Work on your ideas of contour, and make sure you have a destination in mind. Melodies that contain leading tones are often some of the best, too, so go back to your harmony and think about that as well.

Analysis is also your friend, here. Go find ten tracks that you think have well-written melodies, and bring them into your DAW. Try to recreate the melodies with MIDI and compare/contrast them: What do they all do the same? What do they all do that your melodies don't do? What do you do that none of these melodies do? How do they relate to the chords of the song? What is their contour?

its alright man, its part of the process, some days will be harder than others

i think you could to go back to the basics and learn music theory

learn how chords are made, the progressions, triads, 7ths, 9th etc.

try and study popular music out there or your favourite stuff that makes you inspired

open up your piano roll and try to practice, even if its tough, i think that's important
everyday i have to play around with the piano roll to keep it going lol

If you dont know any music theory brush up on that. And also like the other dude said copy a melody you like see why it works and analyse it. It might just inspire you:)
