I just got my first paid production gig and I need some help!!
« on: October 17, 2016, 12:47:48 pm »
Hey guys! So, I've been producing and playing music for a couple of years and I just got my first overseas paid production gig (woo!). I have to compose, record and mix a track for a singer/songwriter based in the UK and I have a week to get it done. I've been sent the acapella for the song idea right now and will get in touch with the artist over email/skype by the end of today. the only problem is I'm an absolute noob and this the first time I'll be dealing with a client professionally so I really need some tips, guidlines, steps (anything!) that would help me go about this the right way. I'm really not sure what steps I need to follow.  Any and all advice would help guys!

first of all, CONGRATS! that sounds really cool. imo communication with the other artist is key. taking some time to find out what you both bring to the table, and what both of your visions are, will help a lot. get familiar with his other work if u arent, and encourage him to do the same!

get contracts, get payment arranged in writing. if anyone says "we don't need a contract, u can trust me," that's a pretty big red flag, but im guessing things are on the up and up there. for basic Industry(tm) stuff, one of the managers of Heroic Records has a lot of good resources. basically, now that there's money being exchanged, it's a good idea to treat it like a job, albeit a job that you enjoy a lot.
check out the chat!! you can join here.

eidolon, thank you so much! very helpful advice. The link was a very informative read. I agree about the payment being in writing, I sent an invoice and had a 50% advance deposit done before kicking things off properly
