Laptop vs PC?
« on: October 14, 2016, 11:09:00 pm »
Hello guys :), I have been thinking in buy a new laptop or PC (when I say buy it means ask to my parents for a new one)(I'm 15)
I know about pros and cons of both but what I should choose?

A laptop (with an external Monitor + mouse, keyboard + speakers)

or
a PC (with the new monitor and other stuff) (In case I decide for this option I'm gonna build it by myself)

Thanks for replies  ;D ;D
Sorry for bad grammar, not my language

Do a custom build desktop x10000

For 800 you can pretty max out every component.

skylake 6700k
whatever mobo (doesn't matter as long as it's compatible really)
16 gigs ram (32 if you really want to cover yourself)
couple 7200 hd's for bulk storage
250 ssd for os and daw (maybe x2 if you want one for samples)

plus a case/power supply should bring you right around 800 if you spend time ordering from the right places.

only thing i'd add is get a full size ATX form factor or medium form ATX.

it'll provide a nice space when you do upgrade.

I'll always suggest a desktop for production. the only reason why you'd want a laptop is if you gotta do this while being mobile.

Josh Huval: Honestly, the guys who are making good art are spending their time making it.

go for specs cause music production takes sooo much CPU

i7 and 16gb ram, good hardrive space 1tb or 2 will do good

...if you gotta do this while being mobile.

That's really the question that needs answering. As most people are saying, you can certainly build a more powerful desktop PC for the same or less money than a laptop... but... are you traveling a lot? If you are, and producing on the road is your main chunk of time for music production, then that's the route you should go and it doesn't really matter if a desktop could and would be a bit faster. It's a time-consuming hobby/profession, so productivity trumps all else :)

Now, I would say go for a nice desktop build, but I think it really depends on your workflow. If you're used to mainly making music in one place (desk in a room, nowhere else), then a desktop would be a great choice. But if you want to produce on the go, then a laptop would be perfect. Really, a desktop and a laptop aren't all that different in terms of specs, but how you want to use the computer is all that matters.
