1st song ever kinda.. feedback please! (Melodic dub?)
« on: August 30, 2016, 03:31:41 am »
I hope I even was able to embed that correctly  :o soooo anyways! My name is London! and I've really only started producing within the past 8 months. I have a little background with music but really only as far as guitar tablature (which I became pretty good at, being self taught).

Since I discovered electronic music about 3 1/2 years ago I instantly feel in love after I heard porter robinson's and funny enough mat zo's "easy". Basically after being in the scene for a while I decided about a year ago that I wanted to try for myself and I decided to pick up mixing. Quickly I realized if I wanted to do anything with this then I needed to learn production!

I started off with trying to sample loops/stabs/drum loops/etc but I didn't even know anything about tempo and learned I wouldn't have any control over any of my sounds and I would never be able to create anything worth a damn. Now I've tried to cram in as many free online music theory classes as I could find on udemy and youtube. As well as tutorials and what have you.

This is still a WIP and I haven't even put anything through the mixer yet. There is only some small volume envelopes and automation. But I actually do know quite a lot about mixing and mastering as far as sidechaining/reverb/EQ/compression/limiting the basics. I just haven't done it because there wasn't much need for it yet and I felt like the idea of the song is coming out.

After my long explanation and I do hope you made it this far with me  ;) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if there is any tips / pointers / ideas / really anything you could think of please share with me! It really is a dream of mine to be able to create music and be a great composer and producer! I think I'm on the right track but teamwork makes the dream work and I hope I can get a lot of great feedback!

Thank you everyone!!

tl;dr I'm kinda/really new at this and need feedback please! Not so much on the mixing side, but composition as well as any ideas and thoughts!

Hello again everyone! I didn't really get any feedback on the original post, but I have been hard at work. This is the updated work I've done so far! Again if anyone has any ideas I'm free and up to anything! Thanks for taking the time to check it out!

Drums are dope. I wish there was more bass and less high-end.

I have the bass pad volume enveloped pretty low so I'll bring that up some, and I also plan on cutting off some of the high end or shelfing it once I get to EQ'ing everything.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll see what I can do and I'm stoked you're diggin the drums! Really happy with how the patterns turned out.

I'm gonna have to agree that there is very little bass, and take it a bit further, there's not much for mid-range either.
Also I don't sense much of an actual melody or defined chord progression (but I mean that's kind of what I prefer in tracks), but that high end synth seems to be more all over the place than anything.

The production is super clean though! Props!

Thank you for the help and production props Arcuo! I definitely took what you said and ran with it. I went back in and cut the high's, I will agree that it sounded way to "screechy". I also added in a mid range melody in the intro to create a more "harmonic" sound.

You were also right about the high end synth sounding all over the place, I had the arppegiator set to bounce which was causing some craziness. I changed it to sticky and went in and fixed all the chords as necessary. Also as far as the chord progressions, I did clean that up slightly as well. I was going a lot more by ear when creating a lot of the melody and a lot of my keys fell out of place.

I was able to bring my bass pad in louder as well! I should have thought about this earlier but I low passed all the high end out of it, and band passed the low mid range to help give room for the kicks. Being able to bring the bass pad in louder has made it more dynamic, in my opinion.

Lastly, I finished up the outro!

If you or anyone has any more tips, I'm still all ears! But this will probably be my last project link for it. I'm extremely happy and excited with how this song has turned out. Especially as I said this is my first full production and composition! I'm wanting to continue furthering my knowledge in sound design, composing, and music theory and I feel like it's time to pack it up on this one and start on something new and fresh.

Thank you again guys for you tips, they were extremely helpful and helped broaden my knowledge!

Here's the final link and some continued feedback would be awesome!   ;D
