I gave up
« on: August 18, 2016, 02:04:41 pm »
After struggling to finish anything since January, due to a medical condition, I accepted defeat.  I can´t create like I used to anymore.
I´ve got 150 half done tracks, many just waiting to be arranged, but my brain does´t work the way it did before.  So I give up.
I´m gonna try on and off, but I just can´t take the feeling of being unable to make tracks, so I´m just gonna own it from now on....

I'm sorry that you've been struggling with a medical condition, but I don't think you should give up completely. What area specifically are you struggling in?

I'm really sorry to hear you've been having a tough time. I don't know how your medical condition affects your music composition process but I used to be the same way. I only started finishing my tracks recently. I can do my best to help you on your troubles if you could be a bit more specific.

Do what feels right. If music's a burden you'll feel better once you let it go.

100.

OP, get the help you need and get yourself better. Don't expect you to have good music if you are in such a crisis of the self.

Art is best reflected in people who have a certain mastery of the self. (not implying you don't, it's just that this problem might be overcoming the mastery and influences how you feel to a negative point)

i don't know how much this will help but i'll try;
years ago i went through the same issue as you with my writing. starting a 5 bar loop, being excited about it for a while then deciding it wasn't good enough and just getting frustrated with the result. It was a very destructive approach, one that lead me to 2 years of trying and failing. I definitely had almost as many little sessions as you, if not more. I wrote 1 song early one day and as usual, started it, worked on it, got excited, then 'tada!' it was absolute crud, i wanted to write something emotive and dark, but all i could put down was lame, cheesy melodies, the bass sounded cheap, the beat was right out of a kids show, but I finally snapped, for whatever reason, i finally dropped the 'idea' of trying to make the song into something and in a moment of rage, said to myself; sod it, maybe im doomed to write crappy cheesy amateur sounding songs, but if i finish this, as least it will be the worlds worst - FINISHED song! after all, i thought, no one has to hear my atrocity.
the reason i tell you all this is just that idea, i don't know if this helps but please, stop listening to other artists on a pedestal, don't compare your work and just focus on finishing them even if its crap, go through the motions regardless and only stop when its a finalised piece of poop. don't listen to ANYTHING unless youre going to do something about it, if youre not feeling the song become clinical, 'ok this needs more X' 'this intro's too long & draggy'. focus on getting something done and dont play back the track unless youre going to do something on it, this will help reduce how worn out you get with a track.

Thanks for taking the time guys, it really is very kind of you
I´m not quitting music, but it seems necessary to realize that the career plan won´t go forward as I´ve hoped.  It stings a bit right now, but it will be OK in the end.

I went through this for like 2 years man, so i know how it feels. There's actually a lot of good books/resources out there for you if you are stuck in a rut. Maybe give some of these a try:

why would you stop doing something you enjoy?

stop focusing on finishing tracks and 'making it'

if you like making music then do it for enjoyment not for money / success / recognition  or whatever reason is getting you down. Sorry to be harsh mate but if you are making music for any of those reasons and not because you enjoy it then maybe you shouldn't be making music. The key to happiness is doing more of what you enjoy; not chasing money & fame.

hope whatever medical condition you are suffering from gets better.

All the best.

Thanks for the input.  I´m really not chasing anything like money, success, fame or whatever.  I have gotten more than I expected from my music already.
I still enjoy messing around in the DAW, but it´s like I´ve lost something that makes me able to make a whole out of my work.  It´s the best feeling in the world for me to listen to a finished track, and as of now I don´t know if I will experience it again.  That´s what hurts.
