As much as I LOVE making, learning (mostly) and exploring music, learning to code, watching YouTube, reading the forum and more, it's getting weird, sad, and a bit surreal to be up to 8-9 hours looking at the screen. It's nice, comfy and I try to exercise everyday to avoid getting health issues from the sitting time...

but the summer went FAST. And I loved it! I learnt a lot, found fantastic music, finished almost 3 songs, and I missed almost no days going for a run and exercising at home. I even picked up some MMO's.

But... I don't know. Maybe you guys have experienced something similar. The internet is a weird and infinite world where you can learn and do a lot, but the outside must be interesting as well. O.O

Just something I wanted to ramble about.

Much love guys!
Some of the best eaters in the world, eat food...this is how the pros eat food like *spoons with ps4 controller* it is way better...it's so much better than using a fork and a knife. Look at that bounce. Some of the top chili eaters in the world use controllers.

Get a girlfriend/boyfriend (problem solved) #AWholeNewWorld #ButOtherProblemsFollow ;D

Looking forward to the day when we're no longer confined to screens to make music. I think making music in the near future will be like in one of those Iron Man movies--augmented reality and hologram tools, it's gonna be cool. You could be outside with friends on the beach, making music together playing virtual instruments :)

If you're concerned about your computer usage then go do something that's not so heavily involved on the computer. or minimize your computer time to only music.

I've played enough MMO's to know they're not worth my time any more, and among other business aspects -_-

The internet is easily gratifying experience....the outside world is tough...

also, don't get a girlfriend/boyfriend just because lol. that's literally the same thing as getting a pet because you're bored.
Josh Huval: Honestly, the guys who are making good art are spending their time making it.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your summer. What you should do aside from exercising is either find some friends or just go out places on your own.

I've been going out to new places this summer and find it to be a great break from producing. Especially since I've been in a bit of a rut since the beginning of last week.

yeah i know man, but its the cost you must pay if you want to be a good producer

you finished 3 tracks, thats awesome

maybe go and reward yourself or do something nice and come back to the studio for more, its good for inspiration and to prevent ear and eye fatigue

Ooooh man, I can give advice on this. A lot. Because I'm exactly the thing you are affraid of becoming in that original post. ;D

Discovered internet at like 12 (which is sadly to say almost 14 years ago :D) and I know what you're talking about. Exactly. Whenever the real world sucked, I just escaped. Went on the internet to read about something interesting, something cool, learn something new. Also intersted in coding, some hillariously failed attempts at 3D graphics and VFX, then migrated to music. That I loved. So I started throwing days, months, years into it. Real life went past meanwhile. Bad life habbits took it's toll. Now I'm 25yo fat bloke with no passion for any sport, losing hair quite badly and my personal life is pretty much a mess. So the danger is f*cking real. Trust me.

On the other hand though! ...I've always thought thats just what it takes at this time and place. That's the price of this hobby. So wrong. (Where's that Hobbit meme, when one needs it? :D ) I wish I knew this back then, but I've met people who just nailed it. Same hobby, some serious skills, but "normal" fit sporty people with I believe quite cool lifes. It got me at first, but the truth is, whenever I meet some of them, I feel good. ...this little detail. I'd write it on a paper and send it back through a timemachine in a heartbeat. :)

So I think the solution is in socializing. Don't close yourself in front of that screen just because it offers more than the real world around you. Find compatible people. People nerdy in the same way. Depending on where you live it could be tough, but trust me, they are out there. (Do it especially if you're still in your school years, where "friendships for life" are fromed.) Then the world might actually reveal itself as interesting as the internet is ... or even more.

yeah i agree with you man , its good to find balance and i strongly agree, i train at a local sports centre, swim, study and will soon live independent from parents for awhile, at the same time i put in more than 8 hours + producing a day, even more on weekends if i have time, once in a while i play small gigs for friends or student parties

its ALOT of computer work, but at the end of the day, playing with synths makes me happy and making melodies, i dont look around at others too much cause you enjoy what you are doing and you need total focus in the studio and you cant produce with distractions on your head

you get weird around your head if you are in the studio too much..so take breaks, you need to find some rest, too after all those hours sitting in front of a computer , rest is as important as producing
i can relate man, cause there was a time where i was up until 3am and my life was getting wrecked but its all about balance and thats life

When I'm in the grind of producing I always force myself to take a day off a week...not really to clear my head, but to remind myself of everything else going on in the world. It's typically Sundays. I walk around and watch people drink and do regular day off stuff. I see how so many people are literally suffering through their weeks to have this short 2 day window, that they then waste on doing nothing of value. The sadness and fragility of their existence energizes me.

Having a girlfriend is a must for me too. When I'm single I go way overboard on hours in the studio and my personality gets...weird. Super bi polar. And when your emotional state is completely riding on your performance in the studio, you spend a lot of time depressed. Except for that fleeting hour or two where you're maniacally happy, reveling in your musical genius.

Eh, in short, be honest about your personality and work around that.

Haha I'm just being honest. I haven't given a whole lot of thought to it, but I think it has something to do with the realness of seeing so many people engage in the same destructive behavior together...it's inspiring to know I'm working on something I don't feel a need to escape from. Some people like to tear others down to feel better about themselves. I think it's a waste of time. There's plenty people out there who have already torn themselves down; you just have to observe them to reap the same emotional benefits.

I feel like I'm actually the opposite of the OP's worry.  I'm the "normal" "fit" "socialized" (married, too) guy.  However, a lot of my headspace is devoted towards music, and I'm constantly worrying and stressing that I'm not doing ENOUGH.  I know I have a passion for it and I know that I enjoy it. This has been proved for over a decade for me - it's not a passing fad.  That being said, I feel a vague unsettled anxiety that pushes me to want to create, create, create.  To the point of thinking, "I need to spend 8 hours a day in the studio."  Given that I have a full time job, I'm gone from 6:30am to 6pm everyday...soooo the whole 8 hour thing is impossible.

I try to remind myself that there is more to life than being good at music. I recently read a book called "Peak" about experts, and it made me spiral into this same hole again.  "I need to be an expert." "I need to be great."  Cuz the thing is..I actually think I CAN be great.  But I don't feel like I have the hours I need to put into the craft what I'd need to to truly be great.  So I'm back at square one.

However, I have a wife ...and someday a family.  I've heard from several new fathers about the impact a kid has on your life and how they put things into perspective.  For instance, one friend said he used to be constantly concerned about his career and moving up the ladder. When he had his first child, all of that faded away and all he wanted to do was come home and play with his kid.

I suppose I'm rambling a bit here, but I understand the OP, and like others, am still searching for that right "balance".

Hey! That's what I feel - I use lots of Internet to obtain knowledge and communicate with others. It's great to see everything connected to each other. What I learn at school is related to what I see on the Internet.
The Internet is like a goldmine of infinite resources to me and it sometimes gives me the pressure to gather much knowledge as fast as I can, and it is good imo.
I think there is nothing to worry about being in front of the computer for a long time because I don't think there should be a boundary between "Internet life" and "real-life".
What you see on the internet is what someone around the globe uploaded, and the questions you throw and the information you share is seen by real people.
Again, the "real" life is connected to the Internet and it's amazing!

You're being honest by not giving it much though? You said that you need to take time off, that's a form of escaping, other wise you'd be working on that day off.

I don't see how it's safe to assume that their behavior is instinctively to escape. There's some facets of life that aren't pleasurable, but you still have to do things in order to get to that point.

You said that there's some people who tear others down to feel better about themselves, and you also think it's a waste of time. But you literally are doing that in a subtle and passive aggressive way?

You're literally making no sense, probably because you haven't given it much thought.

Like i get what you're sort of saying in terms of how people can use things to escape a facets that they don't like, and i don't wanna be like "those people" (loose term), but shit man, you're generalizing a hell of a lot and with very limited logical foothold to stand on.

You reek of a lack of ethics, morals, empathy, and philosophy.

I don't need to take time off-I don't particularly enjoy it because I get bored easily-I just know it's unhealthy not to.

No, reveling in someone else's misfortune is completely separate from actively enhancing it. I don't add any negative value to their lives, I simple convert their failure into positive energy for myself. I'm like emotional vegetation absorbing carbon dioxide and returning oxygen back to Earth.

You reek of a lack of ethics, morals, empathy, and philosophy.

I can see how your first instinct would be to think that, but those four concepts are inherently subjective to every person on Earth so it's an unfair statement generally speaking.

in order to do what photosynthesis does would to imply you are in fact producing oxygen. You're using it for yourself and not spitting any thing else back out. What you should say is that, you're learning from other's misfortune and mistakes in order to progress your individual goals.

I can see how your first instinct would be to think that, but those four concepts are inherently subjective to every person on Earth so it's an unfair statement generally speaking.

And that's why there's a general consensus among more educated people than you or I who have considered those four concepts to great deal and have been around a lot longer than you and i have been on this earth to call it "subjective". It's not a mere brush off the shoulder, they're there for a reason and a foundation so that other people can have their "subjective" experience.

Only through the loss of translation, body language, and potentially lack of understanding in english word choice(as i take it you are an immigrant; from another post you've said) would i consider the last statement to be true.
