Looking for a great way to make these gritty bass shots
« on: July 05, 2016, 07:50:26 pm »
Hey so I find whenever I make a track it takes me forever to find some preset or design my own to make the gritty bass shots similar to the one on beat 1 of every bar of this track that starts at 1 min in this track. Anyone have any good recommendations for preset packs, plugins to use etc?

Thank you!!

Using brass is pretty standard these days for those stabs. Adds a nice burst of organic-ness. You can really use any type of synth sound for it as long as you layer a good transient with something decayed to give that little womp burst.

if you listen closely he just plays it off one note and then the 2nd note is an octave lower i think, 8 bars probably then a clap

start around by playing around with vandalism sound banks for inspiration,

do some research man, sunny lax has preset packs and has that kinda style

all those anjunabeats basses are about sound design and layering, creativity

I've found that Serum is the best for creating simple bass shots. I used Spire before, and it was always tough to get that "grit".

A good way to get that grit is to use aggressive distortion.

ahh to get grit in spire, you have to use the shaper FX, tube etc, but you have to make good sound first before applying FX, yeah its the distortion FX in synths to get grit, i think massive, serum and spire are good for bass

Ye the shaper in Spire isn't as good as Serum's IMO. Spire is still amazing though!

yeah man, i've been hooked on spire recently, the sound is rich and it has a virus TI filter, drool
i've yet to invest time in serum though, maybe later haha cause it takes a lot of time to learn the synth

Haha dammit I keep hearing so many people praise Spire, but when I open it up and see the layout my brain just turns off. It reminds me of FabFilter's synth...which I can't remember the name of right now. Serum just makes me smile; little lights and graphics bouncing everywhere, fx rack like Guitar Rig-it feels like a synth command center haha.

yeah the GUI of serum is very modern and attractive, sometimes i think that can be a difference in your mood
I think i'll have a go on serum soon

I usually use Sylenth1 as my go-to synth because it's so easy to make a sound quick. All it sounds like is a saw wave (maybe a bit detuned) or possibly a triangle wave (detuned as well) - then add a bit of distortion! The ADSR would be edited to be more 'plucky' sounding, too..

Or they could totally be using a brass sample.. Who knows! Sounds dope though.
