Who is your inspiration? What's your background?
« on: June 19, 2016, 05:04:17 pm »
I didn't see a thread for this so I decided to start one.

Who is your inspiration? What makes you want to make music today?

My inspiration is Flume. When I first heard his music I had no clue what EDM was or anything of the dance music realm. Later I met who became a good friend of mine today that introduced me to this music. I had given up on music (I planned to major in music after high school, but my percussion instructor kind of ruined it for me). Long-story short, I found "EDM" through a friend and him and I decided to start producing. He's currently out in LA right now about to start attending Icon Collective with a few of his new friends he met up there (they're fucking awesome producers. Already demoing shit, etc.)

ANYWAYS (I'm rambling) I found this genre of music and knew I had to be apart of it. I love Flume's sound. It's like his sound is exactly what I'm looking for with my own twist. He has some crazy little percussion breaks that I love. His chords, sounds he chooses, everything is truly incredible. It reminds me of myself when I was just tinkering around on an instrument back in band (I liked to hack as a percussionist, lol) finding some weird sounds on a instrument that were out of the ordinary. It was really fun just "making noise."

That's enough about myself as I felt I've already rambled around too much.

What about you guys? Who inspired you to produce today, what kind of background are you coming from?

Ooooh. Much more hopeless story here:

I've listened to EXTREMELY shitty and cheesy music while growing up. That lead me into ATB's early albums, that were quite cheesy at the time, but he kinda matured a little and I guess I did with him. Still love some tracks from that Trilogy album he made later on. :) Also he was the original reason for "I can try this" tohught. It was hard, though. I had no musical education and no ambitions to get one.

...after that I switched straight into trance, so Armin, Tiƫsto, Matt Lange, Andrew Bayer, tyDi, Eco, Airbase, A&B, Matt-Zo, Arty, ...lot of guys like that. After some time, though, a friend from one Czech forum made like the PERFECT trance track (at least by my measures back then), which made me loose all the interest in producing that genere. ...also trance tracks got really formulatic after 2012(ish), so I left it and searched for some fresh air.

Stumbeled upon Sheepy's channel. Since then I'm really into this kind of style-wise independent electronic music. So Ramesses B, KOAN Sound, Culprate, Seven Lions, Mazde, Illenium, ODESZA, Aaron Static, Said The Sky, Asa, Stumbleine etc. ...with slight influences from liquid dnb world like Etherwood or Keeno. :)

That's kind of the thing I go for now. Especially Ramesses B is a big inspiration as he also doesn't give a f**k about what BPM he makes track in. He just does it. ...and in his case it usually ends up awesome.

...but don't overdo it, because that's called being a d***k.

Inspiration = Zedd

Background is been listening to electronic music since I was born cause my dad would DJ in his garage old school Above & Beyond, Kaskade, and Armin Van Buuren. Never really found a passion for it until I was 16. Before then I started playing guitar at 12 and studied music/practiced all day when I came back from school and during the summer. Taught myself music theory and ear training so that my musical foundation was incredibly solid at age 15. Eventually gave up on my dream of becoming a guitar virtuoso and found myself resonating a lot more with the recent innovation in the electronic music community. Started producing/composing when I turned 16 1/2 but never took it too seriously. Taught myself bass, piano, & drums along the way to at least an intermediate level because I was confused about whether I wanted to make rock or electronic music. Finally decided somewhere around the same time that I wanted to learn how to DJ and I picked it up quickly because of the musical background + my dad was my teacher and has been doing this for 30+ years. Now I just turned 19 and I'm just here trying to find my identity as an artist and continuing to fine tune my chops everyday as a college student.

But you guy's don't care about any of that. :)

Main inspiration/influence: Green Velvet and Maceo Plex

When I was 17 I went to a festival with a group friends and was dragged to a techno/house stage for the first time ever (even though I was never into that genre). The music and the people around me gave off the best vibe and I felt like everyone around me experienced more than just music.  That is when I knew that I fell in love with techno and house music.

When I turned 19 I've got to see many of my favourite dj/producers in a clubbing atmosphere such as: green velvet, maceo plex, eric prydz (cirez d), gesaffelstein, deadmau5, jamie jones and more. What inspired me to  produce Green velvet, when I met him at a local club in Toronto (saw him 3 times), he was the most humbling guy I've ever met, and I can truly tell he cares about his fans. I also saw a deep passion for music within him, which got me thinking. Also Maceo plex is a huge inspiration to me as well because he creates music that have meaning and emotion within it. I also love that his music has no boundaries to them. They are truly original pieces of art.

Lydian, God bless you mate. I think it's great/hilarious that you're so young you refer to years in "halves".  So awesome.
