How to make better sounds that don't sound synthesized
« on: June 14, 2016, 04:01:22 am »
I have been producing for like half a year. I've learnt my DAW, Learnt some music theory and learnt what every single knob/button does on NI Massive. I know how to set up things in my DAW and I am getting a good grasp of the composition of chords and melodies. The only things that I suck at and getting really frustrated about is my sound design (specifcally designing lead sounds). Every time i just open massive and design a sound, any sound for example a pluck, pad, bass stab. Whatever. It always sounds so synthesized and so bad. Its really annoying when you have a sound or sound idea in your head but can't create it. How do I make my sounds sound better and not synthesized? I know that's a really broad question but how? Its definitely possible because I know Major Lazer actually use Massive and they make beautiful sounds with it. My main issues with sound design are:

1. What wave table(NI Massive term -> sine, square etc) do I use for a sound? and how to choose one?
2. How do I layer lead sounds properly?
3. How to make sounds that don't sound synthesized?
4. How to get rid of really high static noise in all my sounds without losing high end frequencies

Any help on any of these issues would really help me out and lift my quality of music.

Also I know practicing helps but making bad sound after bad sound is probably not the way to go.

this is old skool advice but you have to copy presets from your favourite synths and watch a lot of videos

so start from an empty preset and try build your sounds

When you get good, you can build your own sounds, that dont sound like presets

this was told to me from a pro producer, the thing is, is that most people dont put in the effort to learn their synths inside and out

there is no other way my man, you have to punch through, unless you wanna tweak presets but even then you have to learn your synths, 6 months just isn't long enough man, its going to take a couple of years before you get a decent sound

a sine wave is used for bass sounds, saw is for leads, etc in electronic music

Thanks for the advice. Do you know any places I can learn the different types of synths? Basically I've watched a tutorial on making super saws and I've applied the basic idea to different wavetables to make a more unique super saw sound. Maybe if I can learn what the different types of leads or sounds there are I can just learn to make them and go from there

you can always do research on how to actually understand all synthesizer, and not just specific ones as well.

the specific application, comes with specific understanding. But it also might be beneficial to understand the common components in a synthesizer. your skills can transfer.

also, you'll always get that synthesizer sound, because that's what you're using. these are electric instruments.

best way to add some different character is to add soft or heavy distortion. that helps with the "realness" in one way.
Josh Huval: Honestly, the guys who are making good art are spending their time making it.

@Marrow Machines
Thanks for the tip. I guess it will always be synthesized to a certain degree but I'll give distortion a go.

@vinceasot
I've seen some of their tutorials, their good but you have to pay for more though =(

You don't need to learn all the synth sounds that would take forever. You just need to get a grasp at recognising fundamental sounds... for example if you wanted to make a nice pluck sound you might want a sine wave with a low pass filter on it being controlled by an envelope with a short decay/sustain and some nice reverb/delay on it(that could be a starting point) Then from there you could decide if you want it to have a bell like character, which in massive you could experiment with the frequency shifter effect as it creates nice inharmonic overtones, once its tuned correctly. A good way to make sounds more natural though is reverb because it puts the sound in a real space, just don't over do it. Heres a video of the pluck im on about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea4hw8rC9_Y

Ok thanks man. Do you know where I'd be able to find out a list of fundamental sounds or how to make fundamental sounds. I've searched the internet far and wide for stuff like this and I've only been able to find answers asking questions on forums.
