Pls, educate me! Non 4x4 styles between 120 and 138?
« on: June 10, 2016, 05:38:07 pm »
Lately I've been digging out some old projects. I've grew up listening to 135-ish trance, so a lot od them are somewhere from 120 to 138-ish BPMs. I like melodies in some of them so I wouldn't like to throw these ideas away. ...but I've been messing with few of them yesterday and I can't shake of the feeling, that no matter what I do, there are only two options how that can end. Either I use 4x4 and end up with yet another trance/proghouse-ish track or I break the rythm, ending up with almost formulatic breakbeat track.

Do you guys have some examples of styles that live around 130 that sound ... eh ... fresh? :) ...solely for inspirational reasons. No shame in that.  :P

well consider this way.

Once you get past the 100BPM mark, you can start dividing the tempos by 2 to get what the half time of that tempo feels like, but still retain the energy at the higher levels.

You can make some pretty ok trap at 130 i'd say, and even at the 120 mark gets you some decent dubby feels.

I don't have any examples, aside from just the math behind it.

but i think what you've described is going to be the dominate beat structure at those tempos.

HA! That's exactly what I thought ... so as not a big of a Trap head, I went to listen to that few Trap tracks I like and tapped their tempo. All around 140 - 150. Which is ok as you end up somewhere around 75 when deviding. Still kinda working "hip-hop speed". But once you go sub-130, devision gets you around 60 bpm. That's waaaay to sloooow. I tried to fix it by pacing of other elements, but that's exactly what gives me that oldschool-ish breakbeat feel.

Jersey and Baltimore Club are usually in the 130-138 range, and they have nice grooves.

Cool way to make things sound fresh... Work with different time signatures, 7/8, 5/4, 6/8 . Our ears get so used to 4/4 that when we hear something outside of this it always feels fresh.

Cool idea! ...I'd still like to keep the overall signatue though. But breaking it for a brief moments could be cool. Or switching to triplets here or there. Thanks! :)

Some of seven lions stuff is like 132 and it has halftime drums like in "don't leave". Not sure if that's what you're looking for.

I've been messing around around a lot in the 100-120 range, it's pretty slugish because I half time it, but I superimpose faster rhythms with textures and percusion over it . I don't really know what you'd call the genre but it ends up feeling pretty down tempoish and kinda bouncy. https://soundcloud.com/namumusic/bloom?in=namumusic/sets/bloom
