Making Unique Music - interview with Mike Monday
« on: June 05, 2016, 01:14:10 pm »
Hey guys,
Thought I'd share this with you. It's an interview I did a little while ago with Mike Monday (check out www.mikemonday.com for more info) about creating your own unique style using your own influences. There's a helpful link to Mike's unique style generator at the bottom. Hope it helps :)

The dude seems a lot more like an over glorified internet marketer than he does a respectable artist. Not a fan of any of his work. Wouldn't take advice from him on writing music in a million years.

It says he's a DJ/producer, but doesn't give any examples of his work. You'd think he'd be proud of his music, right?

I was legit curious, so I dug in and found his SoundCloud, and for the last five years, it's just "motivational" speeches. Nothing in the last five years. And what I did find has not aged well. I'm going to guess he's always been a speaker first and a producer second. Which is fine, if you want to teach people how to become a speaker, but at this point, it looks like his priorities are outside of music, and I kind of see why.

There's a lesson we can learn from this, summed up by a somewhat more legitimate artist.

Seriously considering turning that quote into a poster in my room

He´s alright in my book as an artist. "I dream of ducks" is a classic tune, and some of the stuff he made with Andy Cato is good.

The mentor stuff I can do without.  It´s just a bunch of recycled life coaching combined with the "finish tracks" mantra.  I was tempted enough to sign up once, but it cost a lot of cash even though it appeared to be free at the start.

Yeah, I checked out both of the cheaper 2 week courses and while there were definitely good tips and stuff, I couldn't justify a hundred dollars a month for a drip feed of information that constantly ended with "But NEXT week, you'll learn my HUGE SECRET for making music FAST/UNIQUE."

It was helpful to be reminded how useful meditation can be, though.

I think some of you guys might be too young to remember Mike Monday when he was big. Yes the last 5 years he hasn't been making music and has been mentoring others. I was a big fan when I was younger, so it was great to be taught by him. He also mentors Claude Vonstroke from Dirtybird amongst others.

He also studied music at Oxford.

Here's some examples of his work:

How big was "big"? I've literally never heard of him.

There are shit loads of artists who are big today that I've never heard of too, so that's kind of subjective.
He has releases on Buzzin' Fly, Kinky and an album on OM records. All great labels from back in the day.

I've literally never heard of him.
Well, that´s the best scale to use to evaluate significance....

It's a decent start for "big"ness, though. If someone talks a big game, I expect them to back it up.
