Komplete
« on: June 02, 2016, 02:51:37 am »
Hi, I just wanted to get people's opinion on the entire Komplete bundle. Would it be worth getting?
I just got a new computer and I have a lot more space to work with, so I was just wondering does it have a lot of beneficial sounds/plug-ins to work with?

It's more than 95% of producers will ever need, truth be told. You'll only really end up using one piano. Rise & Hit is pretty good for movie trailer stuff. Monark is solid, and you can go deep with Absynth or Razor. There's definitely gonna be at least one thing in there you'll find use in, but it's up to you to decide if the unused plugins are worth the price.

I don't mean to go off-topic, but what would you suggest for drums? I have trouble finding any good drum samples as I suspect anyone else does. Any tips?

Edit: Also, I'm debating to purchase Massive, but I'm indecisive. I really like some of the modulations it has, but I'm also wondering if there would be anything 'better' to invest my time & money in.

depends if you want all of their products, maybe do a bit of research first and find out what you need, cause it will take a long time to learn the software if you are getting it all

Im a fan of Native instruments, they have a product for nearly everything related to production

Im happy with my go to synth massive and Kontakt for strings and piano, those two are essential to me lol

figure out what sounds come from what synthesizer.

Yea, the basic stuff is there, but what's under the hood will translate differently.

The reason i bought the PX7 (fm synthesizer) and parsect (additive;spectral synthesizer) was because it gave me a good footing of having specific synthesizers based on specific synthesis.

Yea i can do the same thing if i patch together a ton of synths to get additive, and route some things into thor to mix it all up. But you get interesting results with out much frame of reference as a sound designer.

The engineering behind those particular circuits/code makes the instrument.

That's what i'd suggest to you. it's not so much what every one wants, but it's what YOU want your sounds to sound like from the instruments and their potential augmentation/tweaking that you do or may not do.

the only plugin i use for drums is sonic academy's kick 2. if i'm starting in ableton's arrangement view i'll usually just drag audio clips straight onto the timeline just so i can work with waveform data as much as possible - it's so much easier to visualize than MIDI notes. if i'm starting in session view, i'll either build up a drum rack or use individual simpler/samplers, then flatten to audio once i've worked up an arrangement from there. For samples, you can't go wrong with Splice; there's a ton of samples that you can audition before you buy (either as a whole sample pack or per sample) - I recommend the KSHMR pack, the Just Blaze packs, the Mixmash essentials pack, and any of the pegboard nerds emoji EP packs.

As far as non-splice sample packs go, black octopus sound is usually pretty reliable, and loopmasters is a staple of the industry. I'm probably gonna get flak for this, but Cymatics actually has incredibly solid drums sounds for that heavy brostep/trapstep style sound. KRNE has been consistently putting out fantastic sample packs for the trap and future bass sound, and Hyperbits put out a free sample pack a few years ago that I still go to for my house-oriented music.

To me it's worth just for the synths alone. Massive, FM8, Absynth and Reaktor are just legendary. New pianos (from v9) are actually pretty great. Then there's a lot of little gems like Transient Master. Strings and choirs aren't bad either. (I believe those are some old-ish Vienna samples, but quite good anyway.) I don't use Battery too much, though. Coppied it's drum library out of it, but not using it too much.
All and all it's really cool package.

I will caution you, however.  Sometimes too many synths/effects/third party plugins can be detrimental to your workflow and ability to GSD (get stuff done).  If you're the type of person that won't get "distracted" by all of those different plugins and their applications, then by all means - NI makes quality software that has stood the test of time.  If, on the other hand, you find yourself frequently unable to finish tracks and get "lost" in gui's and plugins, think twice before spending your money. You may be better off purchasing one or two synths and learning them inside out.

massive, fm8, kontakt, battery(i just use its drum samples), absynth, and guitar rig are all things i use everyday from komplete, which would've been super expensive if i just bought them separately. i'm not gonna lie, it was overwhelming when i first got it(i'd only been producing for about a year), but personally, the joy and inspiration that comes from getting new software/equipment is incomparable, so i was in a creative overdrive for a solid few months after getting it.

Do you guys think that the sale they're having right now is a good price? Do they have sales that go lower than this?
