Soundcloud Copyright Issues
« on: May 11, 2016, 05:03:16 pm »
Hey guys!
Over the last few weeks I've started to do more remixes, mainly as practice, but also just because it's fun. :)
When I wanted to upload them on SC, some got taken down (Clarity by Zedd) and some not (Chandelier by Sia). How should I go about knowing in advance whether my Remix will get taken down by SC due to copyright? Just upload the clean acapella on my SC and then look if it will get deleted? Or is it only certain labels that take down remixes?
Any help would be appreciated!

Well, it's up to the copyright holder to decide whether to take down a track, so unless you have explicit permission to upload, there's no way to know for sure.

Plus one to Wontolla. Sometimes you just never know until you put it up.

Now I do think it depends on the remix itself. I for one label it as a bootleg since I do not have permission from the artist. I doubt that helps but that's just what I do.

As for the sounds in the remix, if you have parts from the original, it would be easier for the software that scans the song to pick up on that and flag it. (I'm assuming that's how it works.) If you are remixing and using MIDI files, then its less likely to get flagged imo as you are not using any original sounds.

Also if the remix you are doing is part of a competition, then it will most likely never get flagged as the label doing the contest wants you to upload to whatever platform. Therefore they will not flag it.

It depends on on copyright holders - some doesn't mind, some are overly sensitive about unofficial bootlegs.
I know I saw somewhere on the internet the list of artists/labels that holds their copyrights very tight - for example, it isn't a very good idea to remix ABBA, Michael Jackson and definitely not Beatles, they take it down immediately and very often leads to warning/instant deleting your SC account.
The trend that is now is if you value the number of followers on your SC account, you can create special account where you'll post only these remixes and bootlegs and then repost it by your main account so you still reach your followers with the your content. This will prevent (if some copyright violations are found) from deleting your profile with so hard-earned follower numbers, instead Soundcloud will erase only the account with copyright-violating content (aka bootleg profile)
