Does Age Make It Harder To Learn?

Does it get harder to learn new things the older you become?

It depends on how much older you are. If you start with producing at like 10, i can imagine it'd be difficult to properly grasp concepts like compression, EQ'ing and distortion. I myself started when I was 18 and the fact that I was in Uni made it super easy for me to grasp all these concepts. However, I think that if I was lets say 28 when I started, it would've been more difficult for me to work on my creativity. The human brain is more difficult to mold after like 25 years of age, so learning anything will be more of a challenge.

Looks like I got 7 more years to build up those mixing/arranging skills before it's too late and I'm doomed to a life of broken dreams.  ;D

I enrolled in college again about two years ago when I was 26. I'd argue the 18 year olds some of my classes have learned less than I have because I'm less tied down to a lot of the things that you consider to be more important at that age, and I've already gone through a lot of the more common mistakes kids make when they go into college, so I treat the classes differently. Maybe my brain is in some way "less malleable" than a younger mind, but with age (hopefully) comes experience and wisdom which can have its own benefits.

If you are willing to learn, you'll learn - independent of your age. I'd say "kids learn faster than adults" is more accurate, but once you are a grown-up, it doesn't make a difference if you are 18 or 40 in my opinion...

this is an important concept, because my father has not gotten jobs due to the fact of his age. Even though his experience makes him qualified, or over qualified, it's just that they wanted people to mold and form, rather than "this is wtf you need to do to solve the problem"

I just refuse to accept that it would get harder with age. Your priorities shift a lot and foolish hopes weakens I guess, which makes you not want to discover new stuff, but if you really love it, you can do it. I've known few relatively really old people that were courious more than a lot of 20 y/o guys. I love people like this. I want to be around people like this and one day, I want to become someone like that.
"Earth is round right? Look at it from right angle and you'll be always on top of the world."
...but don't overdo it, because that's called being a d***k.

I'm older than most here, I imagine. Here's some things I began to learn at different ages:

By 16 I already played a number of musical instruments.

17 I began learning how to work in recording studios.

25 I really got into computers.

28 I began martial arts. I've trained ever since, and teach as well.

28-35 Read about 3000 books.

30 I began learning Danish and lived in Denmark for quite a few years.

30 I began to learn to really cook. I've kept it up, and can cook about any cuisine.

40 I learned HTML, web design and publishing.  I still do that.

40 I really focused on learning the craft of writing. I still do that.

Along the way, I've kept up with music production and recording technologies every step of the way.

I think as I've aged, I've actually gotten better at learning with more focus.

Heck, sex even gets better.

Fear not. : )

Consider what you have done to train the mind.

What are others doing to train the mind and the body so that it deteriorates slower?

That's a really encouraging post, thanks.

I agree with the 'Fear not.' part, I'm 43 and still learning. In a much more focused way than when I was younger.

I'm 29, but I've been doing music production off and on since I was 18, and only just in the last couple of years getting more serious into it. I don't think it's harder for me to learn, but maybe my foundation helps.
