Fast Forward (EP) | Funk, swing jazz, and 90's house...
« on: January 06, 2016, 04:48:38 pm »

Hello, I make music under the name 'auvic.' Recently, I remastered this EP that I released independently last year summer. It's one of my favorite works I've ever worked on, so I would like your opinion on them. And please give me brutal honesty, for that's how I thrive.

Thanks in advance :)

Hey Auvic,

First heard your music a few months ago and been loving it! Personal favourite is Paramour.

Regarding this EP, love it! That guitar is great, did you record it? Or is it a sample?

Great work :)

The guitars were recorded by me, except the track Feelin' Good, where my friend Gene wrote and performed the guitars. Thanks for listening!

Not a remake, but I know the song you're talking about. 'Swing Break' by McMash Clan, and I love that song. However, the chord progressions use in both this song and mine aren't unique in swing music, and it's been used a plethora of swing tracks. I didn't particularly draw the inspiration from Swing Break--I personally love chromatically descending dominant chords when it comes to jazzy stuff.

Its awesome man. Keep making music, I'm really curious to see where you will progress. Great use of instrumentation and song structure.

Where did you get the drums? Record them yourself? They sound great either way.

Hey auvic cool seeing you here :)

since im a huge fan of you and your music im going to happily give some feedback. Bear in mind tho that im still a noob producer so i cant really give critique on mixing for example.

First of all, im not sure, do you want feedback on the whole EP or only those 2 tracks? well im going to go through the whole EP then.

You'd Never Know:
I love the drums and the little fills you make. the timing on the guitars is really on point. the percussion is really good. Sometimes i feel like those metalic sounds in the back are repeating to often but they still sound good. Theres a lot of variety in the song and i like that

Take Me Away:
God that bass guitar is good. Theres not a lot going on in the track compared to You'd Never Know but i like that. Also the Vocals are pretty cool, i usually dont like female vocals too much but these fit pretty well. The 2:30 fill was crazy. oh god 3:00 the transition with the vocals was dope. That new synth in 3:30 surprised me but it sounds pretty unique. All in all i enjoyed that track a lot. Maybe the clap wasnt enough hard hitting for me but thats it.

Swing out, Jive In:
Man ive listened to this song a lot in your stream. The Cello or whatever that string instrument is just amazing. Im always amazed of how good you can compose. Pipos voice is fitting your style and i love that. Im pretty sure i dont have to comment on that piano. Oh the acoustic drums are neat too. Im not sure about the saxophone. I feel like it lacks tonality but it still fitted well with the rest. Overall i think this is my place 2 of the EP

Feelin' Good:
The jazz guitar or electric guitar is on point. The drums fit the timing pretty well too. I like the end a lot where it gets crazier. Im not sure what it is but the way everything works together at that part amazes me. When replaying i noticed that i didnt really hear the hi hats too well but they fit the timing pretty well. Place 3 for me.

Let's Go:
This track is my number 1 of the EP. I really love the tempo which the track is and Pipos voice once again gets me. Kind of reminds me of some old Tony Hawks music that i really enjoyed. Sometimes i dont quite understand what pipo is saying after lets go lets go ... left? Oh and there we go. i think thats the only track you have your lead in. Kind of missed it :D To me the track was a bit to short but a nice finish for the EP. Is it normal that you have 2 seperate guitars playing left and right? i mean it sounds cool but i never did that kind of stuff or heard that anywhere.

I loved the EP. Was different from your usual style that i've seen. its sad that the EP didnt get more attention :/ I know you didnt send this to a label but still.

PS: i would love to write more with you :)
i stream on twitch if you want to see a noob producing

Great sounds, really unique! Not much in the way of constructive feedback since your skills are def high imo.  On You Never Know, maybe around 2:07 do something to add interest, like drop the electro part and let the guitar solo take over.  Great job, nice to see OC musicians cranking out cool tunes

The drums were all samples--both real and electronic.

Hey, Skytrias. Thanks for the feedback--you're right about the hi-hats on Feelin' Good and the claps on Take Me Away... sometimes I'll work on a different part for so long, some things get lost in the background, something I'm trying to improve on. And Let's Go, Let's Go is your favorite one? You're the first one to tell me that--usually everyone hates this one! And yeah, I separate the guitars purposely to give it a more realistic vibe on the performance aspect (not a sound aspect).

Thanks guys for the comments

Hello Auvic,

I checked out your two songs you posted here and they sound great!

You'd never know has a lot of high frequency information on my headphones but Swing out... didn't have the ear fatigue.

Great stereospread, sounds pro!
