getting stuck in the drop
« on: April 27, 2016, 01:20:15 am »
     Hey Guys!
I've been listening to some dubstep lately(Virtual Riot, Au5, Barely Alive, Excision) and as I try to make some of my own, I encounter the problem of not coming up with any good drop progression. Like, i'm not a master at sound design(I can make some growls and stuff, but nothing groundbreaking), but I think there's a lot of good drops that dont have that much sound design in them.
So, everytime I open up my DAW and try to make something, I follow these steps:

     -Open Sylenth1
     -Make some chords
     -Make some drums
     -Make a lead
     -Move on to the drop
     -Get nothing  :( :(

So I'd like to ask you guys if you ever had the same problem and how you usually go through with it. Or even  if you never had that problem, share your usual process into making something new, maybe I could try some of your methods. Thx in advance.  ;D

Instead of listening to some dubstep, actually listen to dubstep.

Pick 3 songs from each of those artists and bring them all into your DAW. Start examining them one by one and study how the drops work. Use empty MIDI clips to mark off the different sounds in the drop. Every drum hit, every bass shot, every background sound. While you're at it, see if you can figure out what happens for the rest of the song.

I promise by the time you're done with all 12 you'll never get stuck building a drop again.

Hello i am well into producing EDM drops and i may be able to give you some advice.

1. Open Sylenth 1, load a Vandalism sound bank.
2. Create some minor chords (6 bars).
3. Turn volume of this to 0.5 (half).
4. Open either another Sylenth 1 or nexus and load a pluck or nice lead.
5. Copy chords from first sound, paste in new sound and chop how you like.
6. Make all of the notes smaller by a tiny bit.
7. Dont change volume on this sound.
8. Add a 1/4 kick.
9. Sidechain your 2 sounds.

See what that sounds like.

Hope that helps!  8)
