Meghan Trainor - No remix | how does this mix sound?
« on: April 25, 2016, 02:28:41 pm »
Hey all,

I've been poking this remix for a couple of days and I'm wondering if my arrangement could better...

also, I'm not super happy about the break down sections either.

Any and all feedback & suggestions are welcome :)

(feel free to leave comments on soundcloud if its easier for timed comments)

Thanks for taking the time :)

The music industry is just a giant fail machine. There are way more broken dreams and failed artists then there are successes to speak of. Therefore, its easy to say the successes are the anomaly and the failure is the product.

I'd up the tempo right away; I think it would definitely suit a faster BPM.

However I think the arrangement is pretty good, though adjusting the bpm to something like 128 will completely change the flow so would have to review it again, though I'm definitely digging this and hope you do up it :)

Honestly dude this sounds dope. Have you tried starting with the 'all my ladies' section, just the vocals and doing a low pass sweep into the instrumentation?

Sounds nice overall, not sure if that dubstep-ish snare fits the track though, maybe try somenthing like a clap, it should sound better imo.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'd up the tempo right away; I think it would definitely suit a faster BPM.

Here is the 127 bpm version for you (I like the hook but the acapella sounds rushed to me):

And here is the 112 bpm version with the claps (you are right, it sounds better):

I'm kinda leaning towards the slower version with the claps right now but I would love to hear more of my fellow producer's opinions on the subject!

You're right - the whole track sounds much better now but the pella does indeed sound rushed :/

Catch 22 I guess, depends on what you're planning on doing it for - is it just for the art or are you wanting it to be popular amongst DJs on Soundcloud? That's the question which will tell you which direction to take it I think.

Oh and I noticed it before but it didn't bother as much, but speeding it up as made it more noticeable - the clap kind of sounds out of sync a little, eg at 1:20.

Are you suggesting just removing the first ( 8 ) beat driven bars altogether? Or keeping that section but replace the acapella with "all my ladies" and low passing the instrumentation in up to the break?

I think that 112 version with the claps is the winner. I also don't mind the claps being a little out of sync.. it gives it a little more humanized depth to the track. Really good!

yea.. I'm digging that 112 version too.. the problem is I'm still torn between the claps and the snare version... Maybe with the snare brought down in volume and leaving the claps on top.. I dunno.. I need to give it a break for a few days and come back with some fresh ears I guess.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah I'd stick with the claps rather than the snare :)

I'd say it becomes a litttle too repetitive. feels like it needs a downsection with a different chord progro/vibe to it. Another thing I suggest adding is some kind of additive melody over the drop. Gets too bland as well. I like the sounds used though. They're solid! Just could use some extra punches here and there.

Thanks for all the great feedback! I've done a first pass mixdown and mastering of the track and would love it if you guys could give it a listen and let me know what you think about the mix.

Thanks in advance!

Nice master but I think the vocals would definitely benefit from some more stereo width and perhaps more reverb, they sound quite dry right now. Also, if you're careful - I'd try make them a little more crisp as well by adding some high freq (just not too much or they'll become harsh)

Yea I think you're right. I've updated the track with your suggestions. I used the vengeance audio stereo bundle and their multiband compressor to bring out the presence and widen up the vocals. I think I found a nice balance without getting too harsh. :)

For-sure :)

However, there is perhaps a little too much mid in the vocals - it's hard to judge cause I'm away from home using my DJ phones' so not exactly the most accurate, I'll try remember to give a listen later!
