Do you force yourself to sleep?
« on: April 15, 2016, 10:53:31 am »
I know a lot of it was discussed in work ethic topic, but I'm interested in this detail in particular.

It's 1am. You're staring at the screen. Track goes on and on. You know what to do, but you're not sure about that one little thing you want to solve. You're sure once you've solved it, the rest will be a piece of cake. ...but it's 3am out of the sudden.

Do you stop somehow and force yourself to get a proper chunk of sleep? If so, how? I fail to do this every. single. time.

...but don't overdo it, because that's called being a d***k.

What's the link to the work ethic topic? I'd be interested to see it.

So, do I force myself to sleep? Not really. I do try to sleep sometimes. Usually what happens is after a while, I just fall asleep somehow.
I don't think I can help you though, because it sounds like you stay up late making music and I don't.

Take yesterday for example. I went to a basketball game, and I really tired myself out. So when I got home, I did my homework and fell asleep. This situation doesn't apply to every night, but I usually keep producing out of my evening schedule with after-school activities and homework. It's better (for me) that way, I think.

In that case I'd say consider yourself lucky. My damn body has no problem to stay in this "half-asleep" state whole night. When that happens, the next day is pretty much sh*t.  ...on so many levels.

I force myself to go to sleep. I have work in the morning.  Wish I didn't, but I do.

But are you able to do it soon enough? I work too, I know I'm gonna screw ap at work if I won't sleep properly. ...yet for some reason a lot of times this rational thinking just isn't working at 2am and I let myself limit sleep time to like 3 hours a day or something.

I make better music when I've just woken up, my ears are more fresh first thing in the morning, and I just seem to feel happier when I wake up with the sunrise. If I have a great idea late at night I might sketch something out, but a 5 hour session starting at 9 PM is drastically different from one starting at 9 AM (and the latter I'd argue is more productive). Plus I'm taking two 8:30 AM classes this semester, so it's easier to just accept my position and find a way to work around it than it is to hinder my education.

If I'm making music and I'm REALLY into it then I can't sleep. I won't want to go to sleep. I've had times where I've been at my dads house 20 minutes away and have woken up at 2am only to drive back to my house because I felt inspired and wanted to write music. I don't think this is healthy but when I'm working on something and I just had an idea I HAVE to get it down ASAP because I don't want to risk losing the idea.

I used to work full time and go to school full time and that's when I couldn't just stay awake whenever tf I wanted. Thankfully I'm only going to school now so I have certain days during the week when I can stay up till 7am if I desired to do so.

You have a choice at 1 am to either go to sleep or not.

Once you've realized it's 1 am, that should trigger some response in you to go to sleep. Other wise, you're not going to do it any ways, and you have to suffer the opportunity cost of staying up.

Last night I was in that same boat. I wanted to stay up and work on some mastering (i just bought a maximizer and wanted to test it out), but i realized i was sleepy as hell.

But i did make great progress on one song that i've been literally listening to for months, and realized i had this weird frequency build up in my reverb buss. So i had to change it to post instead of pre fader settings.

regardless, when i decided to do that, i quickly fell asleep.

So, decide and stick by your choices lol

I am able to do it..only because my body is pretty well trained to do so.  In other words, my circadian rhythm is strong!  For instance, I can't remember the last time I pulled an all-nighter. It's just not something I ever do. I enjoy sleeping and I think I respect the benefits it provides.

That being said, there are times where I've felt creative and inspired but had to work the next morning...so the bed beckons me away from Ableton..

Oh well. The flip side to this is that at least I don't have to DEPEND on making music for my income.  While I realize that may be the goal for a lot of people (and me sometimes in my head), that is a bit more pressure than making music for fun.

I've battled with staying up to finish projects before, and I think it's more productive to just get enough sleep and keep working the next day. It's so hard for me to stay focused when I'm really tired, and it majorly cuts into how well I produce.

I go to bed at around 10-11pm whenever I can. I treasure the nights I can do this because my gigs usually end at midnight or close to. The way I see it, night time is for sleeping. Your body's natural healing time is between 11pm - 3am.. I would strongly recommend taking advantage of this.

Also, I am most productive in the morning, be it music production or music playing practice.

In short, I don't ever have to face myself to sleep.. my body naturally wants to sleep at night and do stuff in the morning/daytime.

I do not force myself to sleep.

My sleep schedule is a mess.

The night has a very different mood from the day. I get more done at night because there is significantly less distractions at night. Everyone is sleeping so I know I wont be bothered.

It's very hard for me to stop what I'm doing and goto sleep. Especially if I'm not tired. I regret it in the morning though so lately i've been giving myself the 11pm bedtime. Weekends its a free for all though!
