Looking for Studio Monitors.
« on: April 09, 2016, 03:28:09 pm »
Hi,
I am looking for Studio Monitors. They are going to be placed near the wall, so they probably need to have sub in the front. My budget is 200USD per speaker. Rokit 5G3's are meeting my requirements best so far, but people say they are not that good. Any Ideas?

Most modern monitors, including the KRK's, will do the job. The key is to "learn your monitors", meaning learn how their frequency response is.  Are they bass heavy compared to most standard car stereos?  Do they give a clear response on the high-end?  All of this comes with experience with your monitors.

Sure, it's preferable to have acoustic treatment, but for a lot of people that's not possible or necessary.

My advice: pick ones you like in the price range that you can afford (like the rockits). Search around for the best deal.  Get them.  Get a decent audio interface, too.

I've recently bought 2x Yamaha HS8 and all I can say is that I'm really happy with that purchase because they just works perfect and and the sound is pretty clear. That's why I hardly recommend them to each and every producer :P
If you want to collaborate , just send me a PM :P

If this is your very first pair of speakers being used to mix, i'd say the krk's are good for that.

Other wise, if you've been doing mixing on any thing other than the krk's, i suggest you look in to the 350$ price bracket. The quality will be so much better than to just basically get a side grade to the krk's.

I didn't find KRK's to be that precise.

But, if you've got a steady income and want more tiers to your upgrade, then yea w/e lol buy them or something in that 200$ range.

They are my first monitors, I have done everything on my headphones so far. Unfortunately, I cannot raise my budget :( The other possible choice is JBL-LSR305, but it has sub on the back. Is it really that bad to have it that way near the wall?

I've had two pairs of studio monitors - both of the ones you're considering. I like them both. I've had both in front of walls.  No significant difference between the two.  I like the look of the JBLs better.  And FWIW, one of my KRK's tweeters crapped out after a year or two.  Tried getting a part to fix it, but it was an internal issue.  I've had no problems with the JBLs so far.

Again though - I think you'll be fine with either. They're both solid, reputable-branded speakers at a good price.  Don't get too caught up in specs or what people say on forums...because usually people just say what they own is "best"..

It's good to understand the specifications and know how to calibrate your speakers to the room you're in.

But, You still have to go in and try to get the best thing for your situation though.

idk about the JBL, but the krk's should work fine.

Just remember to keep saving your money.

I have the JBL 305s. You won't be disappointed. I think I paid $200 for the pair, new, on Amazon. I was quite shocked at the price and had to pull the trigger.

Ive never had the KRKs but I hear they are more bassy. Ive never had them so Im not 100% on that.

If you can afford the Yamahas, do it.
Ableton Live 9, Tascam US4x4 Audio Interface, Akai APC Key 25, JBL LSR305s, & Pioneer HRM-07s

KRK's are more top and bottom end biased, the mid range didn't have the clarity. this was on a 5 inch cone, but i bet it would translate just as well on a bigger cone, if KRK kept it's philosophy the same.

Solid choice, but, i'd recommend the 8inch cone at least.

reason being, you'd spend less money on the 8 inch together, than you would with a five inch and a sub.

I'll always suggest to save a little extra to get that push past consumer status into a low grade professional/amateur. The quality difference is amazing.

a few years ago I bought the JBL LSR 2300's with the 10" Sub to complete the set.  The sub reeaallly brings everything full circle with completing the low end of the sound that is needed when properly placing your sounds in the mix.  The actual monitors have a flat response, and it can easily pick up a bad mix.  Just look at the reviews on amazon to really have a better idea about them.

I paid 500 for the set but when I looked at retail it was only 100-150 more.

But are 8 inch monitors good for a small room? I have a 3x4m room.

keep the volume low. unless some one else can say otherwise.

the idea is that you'd spend less money for when you get a larger space, or dedicated room.

and you can get a better monitoring range with out the added cost of a sub bass.

http://www.audiogurus.com/learn/speakers/what-size-speakers-room/85

get the cubic dimension of your room and consider the size.

http://www.acousticfields.com/speaker-size-vs-room-size/

This guy seems to be talking about the actual size of the speaker, and in this case the speaker is 6 feet in a 7 feet. We're talking about inches here....

http://recording.org/threads/monitor-speakers-and-room-size-a-disheartening-dilema.26162/

There's a post in that link that says that no speaker is to large for a room, but if you play it at a loud volume, then you'll start to get undesirable results.

I also saw some conflicting talking about how the speaker needs space to open up, and i think this applies to the sweet spot and the calibration of the monitor placement.

Soooooooooooooooooo, more things to consider and please rebut me if i am giving false information. I am not a professional or spend a large amount of time dealing with these things.

I just found that, i can hear a larger range for not that much more money if i bought the 8 inch speakers.

JBL, KRK or Yamaha are for small studio perfect. You have to spend more then $100 for a single speaker.

I think this site is helpful http://www.nevvharmonic.com/best-studio-monitors/
