Using a MacBook for FL
« on: April 08, 2016, 06:25:39 pm »
Why do a lot of big producers that use FL Studio use a Mac for producing (Avicii, Martin Garrix) instead of just buying some high-end laptop like an Alienware or something else?

Probably because they want to.  ;)

Reliability maybe? I've bought two windows laptops in my lifetime. Both of them about $1000. Both of them crapped out on me within a few years. That's WITHOUT being on tour and using them mainly at home.

Aside from style they are built like a tank. Good for traveling. Also the system is usually a bit more stable.

Some of those same producers use Win machine at home though. (Including Deadmau5, Aviici, Garrix) ...for upgradability, part prices and so on (Edit: And for FL being Win only for a long time. That's true.). Also Windows kinda kicks ass at backward compatibility compared to Mac.

...it really depends on your priorities.

Because the Mac does not crash.  Porter Robinson stated that it was really hard to produce on a PC as he loved FL, but the OS was shit.  I changed from PC to Mac 8 years ago, and I never looked back.  It just works.  I was a real PC fanboy, but when I got a MacBook for my birthday, I was convinced after a week.  No blue screens anymore.  And I really get the part about knowing where stuff is, and that upgrades are easier.  But it really removes almost all of your hardware and software concerns.  No drivers, and so on.  And most Macs run Windows faster than same specced PCs.

I'd love to see test of this. Anyway even if true, you'll pay half the money for similar specced PC. ...and for the same money you'll get PC beast. (At least in Europe.) Also, if you're treating your PC well, it will last too. (Especially dust intake from in-bed use or dusty environment causes lot of PC laptops to overheat and slow down.) True, Macs can handle much tougher handling. They're usually built crazy good.

...I'd definitely go for the best CPU you can afford, as that's where audio processing happens. Mac or PC. ...as highend Macs are damn expansive though, if on budget, I'd go for PC.
