Making sacrifices for music
« on: April 07, 2016, 12:31:36 pm »
Something got me thinking lately.

I do have this really time demanding kinda stressful job. It pays somehow ok and it's really interesting one (ob-truck technician), but it does eat really a lot of time. ...to the extend I can't help myself from blaming it for few missed cool chances in music production.

I'm thinking about giving it up for music. Finding something else with more free time, but I've learn some cool stuff there, made some good friends and financial stability is pleasing thing to have.

...would you do it? Have you made some big sacrifices for music? Which ones?

I am literally sacrificing every part of my life right now to get my mechanical engineering degree.

My plans with that engineering degree is to build a dubstep studio.

So now i eat, sleep, and breath calculus so that i can make music in the future.

Where i come from, i know alot of world renown musicians who have a day job.

Unless you have other obligations that need more financial priorities, you can work with your job to get the schedule you want.

But outside of that, you know what you gotta do man.

Or, consider activities that you are doing instead of making music. And i know it's a process and you need to be of right mind and body to do it, but you could be not doing it because of something else.

When i was working 12-14 hrs a day as a catering chef, i would just come home and smoke pot. Some times on my days off i'd get to making music, but it was mostly filled with smoking pot and playing video games. So those long days/work schedule really pays a toll on you.

Just make sure you do the work for the time being, and try to take every opportunity you can to make music. Even if it's ONE LITTLE SOUND or eq nudge, you've made progress.

Some times all we have is the small victories, just take em while you can.

The only things I've sacrificed for music is girlfriends, grades, and a social life. I DEFINITELY know what you're going through. I used to work 40 hours a week + go to school full time + work on a side business.

Eventually that side business started to make me enough passive income that I've been able to quit my job for the time being and just focus on music and school. That's what I would advise you to do the same instead of quitting your job. Find a way to make passive income that way you can focus on your music without putting your financial life in jeopardy.

I have a full-time, stable job that has nothing to do with music and isn't entirely "fulfilling" either.

But I once heard a good thing about having a job - you have the ability to say "no".  Meaning: when you don't have a job, you sort of need to take whatever comes your way if you want to live, eat, etc. But by having a stable job, you can evaluate your different opportunities and pick the best one for you from a place of leverage, not desperation.

So - sure, my job has nothing to do with music and it sounds wonderful for me to get paid what I'm getting paid now for doing musik stuff...but that's not easy to come by.

I'm working through this "job vs. passion" thing myself..

Thanks guys. Funny part I forgot to mention is that this job and producing is pretty much all I do. Excluding small occasional exceprions I pretty much gave up all social life, family plans etc... That also can't be too healthy.

But it's nice job, close to media industry. Those ob-trucks are essentialy TV stations on wheels. ...but it also means looong bussines trips across Europe with a lot of almost sleepless nights, no posibility of creating any routines, longer schedules etc... I really dunno how to face it.

The ideal vision I think would be to have a social life filled with other producers. The thing that makes it hard is that most of my interests lie in music composition/production so when I try to hit up a conversation with someone it's not like I can say "Dude! I was messing around with bus compression the other day and realized that if I set a fast attack it really smooths out the transients!"

People will instead just look at me like "wtf..."  ;D

As far as the job vs music thing you probably shouldn't quit your job until you're making enough income off of music to afford your basic expenses. Just my opinion though. Nothing's really set in stone.

Yeah, I also talk too nerdy as well. :D

...that's the funny part. I'm thinking about changing otherwise quite interesting job for some less time demanding one. I wouldn't like to stop my income completely. I don't think I'm even  capable to make a single dollar by music. I'm actually not sure about the other things I'd loose. Position, colleagues, access to kinda cool tech etc...
