Syntorial: Learning Sound Design by Ear
« on: April 06, 2016, 12:31:31 am »
Hello all!

I just wanted to share with you guys an amazing program I stumbled upon from Morgan Page's producer tips twitter account (@MPQuickTips). It's called "Syntorial" and a computer program course that's teaching me how to synthesize my own sounds from ear. It's so fantastic that I wanted to talk about it here, since I figured there are lots of producers in this forum that want to understand synthesis and sound design better.

Here's what you need to know.
  • Syntorial costs about $130, and has a nice free demo so you can try it before you purchase
  • It has about 200 lessons that go over all of the fundamental aspects of synthesis, which will go a long way for sound design
  • It's a course geared for the EARS, meaning they teach you how do identify how a sound is made by listening, and then going and matching it yourself. In other words, you hear it, try to copy it, and check how close you got.
  • They use their custom synth called "Primer", and it's included as a VST/AU with purchase
All in all, I HIGHLY recommend Syntorial for anyone looking to learn synthesis and expand their sound design capabilities. If you're interested, check out their website www.syntorial.com and download the free demo. Feel free to ask me questions in the comments :)

I found the demo to be very basic and then looking at the names of all the later locked lessons it still didn't seem to get too crazy.

Maybe for someone totally new to sound design it could be an asset though.

Yeah I can understand that! I am very new to sound design, as I've been stricken to using presets up until now.

The demo is basic as it is just the introduction to subtractive synthesis. The later lessons are incredibly difficult but not impossible. Would highly recommend.

the only bad thing is the fact that you can get a 90% similar sounding patch but the parameters are not exactly the same as the final patch and you get somewhat unfair ratings. as stated in the title, this is probably better towards people who want to get sharp at sound design especifically. as for producers in general, you only need to have the idea of what does which, but obviously being sharp at sound design is always an 'extra hand'. IMO it has alot of patches per lesson aswell, and since you repeteadly need to hear in-between your patch and the final patch, you can get tired of your session quickly.

Overall good and usefull, great for that daily one hour training.
