I'm looking for tips on how to build a good drum library with quality samples.
Do I have to pay big money to get proper quality, or can free sample packs do the trick? Is it the bigger library, the better? Do most professional producers make their own drum samples?

Please, do enlighten me!  ;D
Thanks!
So much to learn, so little time

free packs nowadays are so good. but you need to explore and download weird stuff in order to expand your library (otherwise you'll be stuck forever with mildly-distorted 808s and "urban kicks"). you can sort of make your own kick using Sonic Academy's Kick (got to pay though). always look for samples on genres you don't touch, and after a few months and a couple of gigs, always delete all the sounds you don't like and never uses (this is just for cleaning, makes it easier for you to browse without getting a headache after listening to a million toms)

Some of my favorite samples have been ones that I picked up from various FLP downloads and free sample packs.  Just be on the lookout for free samples and downloads and things and you might strike gold.  There's definitely some luck to it.

if you own a legit copy of Logic, Ableton, or FL Studio each comes with a pretty seep sample library of various drum kits. I would go through those and look for your absolute favorites, then sign up for Splice Sounds and get the 100 or 200 sample a month option (not gonna be more than $20 a month IIRC). Then start pack-diving. Instead of having to download a bunch of sample packs and remove the ones you don't like, you can now search for specific sounds you want, find the exact sample you want via audio preview, then buy it (and have it available for redownload forever).

I have an incredibly obnoxious sample library of drums. I love drums....

I have a lot of the sample packs from there, mostly hip hop and stuff.

I have bought a few packs just to do something different. I do recommend getting some quality paid samples.

good quality for what you get. I get the one shots for like 5 bucks and that does wonders for me.
