Mono Maker/Stereo Widener plug in
« on: March 15, 2016, 09:00:00 pm »
Hey guys. Interested in some plug ins or advice/reviews on some plug ins that help make low frequencies mono. Looking for something with flexibility. I'd like to be able to adjust at what frequency things become mono and also something that could possibly widen some of the higher end frequencies. I have looked at Brainworx digital V2 & also Mono Filter by Nugen Audio. Mono filter looks like its pretty simple to use. I haven't used either but just watched vids.

Would appreciate some feedback on these or other plug ins to check out. Not looking to break the bank on buying anything crazy expensive.

Learn to make things less stereo instead of more stereo.......

you have every capability to control the frequency with eq.

you also are in control of the frequency content by the sounds you make, also when it's being treated with eq.

Make your mix wide, not your master.

Or, if in sudden need, you can filter out the lowend from side signal on M/S equalizer. Pretty much the same effect.
"Earth is round right? Look at it from right angle and you'll be always on top of the world."
...but don't overdo it, because that's called being a d***k.

I use a frequency splitter in Bitwig (native plugin) and then either put a tool/utility or Waves' S1 Stereo Imager on the frequency band I want to affect.

Multiband compressors often have this kind of functionality built in, like Maximus in FL studio if you use that.  Here's one freebie: http://www.gvst.co.uk/gmulti.htm
I'm not sure but I would guess that they use M/S processing behind the scenes, does anyone know better?

Izotopes Stereo imager -  pretty amazing plugin. You can split your frequency bands wherever you like and make your signal narrower or wider for each frequency band. It will also show you I you are keeping in phase and you can solo each band to see the effect.

TP Basslane - great for something like basslines - you basically set your cutoff point then everything under that cutoff point will be sent to mono. So there is no need to split your basses and send them to different channels just slap on a basslane and send your subs to mono.

Sonalksis Stereo tools - Good from 'spreading' sounds. I might use this on something like my hats or percussion buss to slightly spread out the upper mids and high frequencies.

Why do you guys assume that OP is going to use this for mastering?

Well, if you are using ableton you can use the simple Utility rack. I know you said something with flexibility, but this tool gets the job done for me. I use it on my bass, kick, and snare.

Why do you guys assume that OP is going to use this for mastering?

it's a typical route that is traveled among producers with out very much knowledge.

Hence, this forum being in existence and questions like OP are being asked. Chances are OP might want to think about a way to use things that are not necessarily beneficial for OP's learning experience.

Reason being, i've done stupid shit before, but i won't be doing stupid shit in the future. But only OP can stop the self that is OP's self with experience and guidance from people who have messed up more than OP even tried. More than likely.

until evidence is provided other wise, my assumptions will remain as though they are true.

If you use ableton, I throw a utility on every single channel I use now. makes everything so much easier in the long run
